Chinook salmon fishing in Puget Sound is a bucket-list experience for many anglers, and for good reason. With its deep waters, strong tides, and diverse marine life, Puget Sound offers some of the best opportunities to target salmon in the Pacific Northwest. Recently, we had the chance to hit the water near Tacoma with the Duckworth team and learn firsthand what it takes to land these prized fish.

Preparing for the Day on the Water

One of the first lessons in chinook salmon fishing is that preparation matters. Stopping by a local tackle shop, we picked up essential gear: Gamakatsu circle hooks, swivels, Seaguar line, and beads. The bait of choice included anchovies in several sizes, all rigged to run behind flashers and downriggers.

For newcomers, downrigger fishing can feel intimidating. Unlike other types of fishing where you’re constantly holding the rod, this style relies on heavy weights and precise depth control. The goal? To drop your bait to where salmon are holding, often 140–180 feet down, and let the gear do its job.

Learning the Techniques of Chinook Salmon Fishing

On Puget Sound, tides and structure play a huge role. Running flashers with anchovies and adjusting depth with Canon downriggers gave us the best chance at drawing bites. The action can be subtle—sometimes nothing more than a light bounce on the rod tip signals a strike. When that happens, reeling down quickly and popping the line off the downrigger clip is key to setting the hook.

We learned that chinook salmon fishing windows are often short, tied directly to tide swings. Missing that bite window can mean a slow day, but even then, the time spent learning and experimenting is invaluable.

The Thrill of Hooking a Chinook

Patience paid off. After hours of trolling, the rod finally bent, and the fight was on. Watching the chrome flash of a chinook salmon rise from the depths was unforgettable. Some were wild fish that had to be released due to their intact adipose fins, but the hatchery fish provided the reward of fresh salmon fillets for dinner.

Catching a first king salmon is a milestone every angler remembers. The excitement on board was contagious, and soon another chinook was on the line. These fish hit hard, run fast, and test every part of your setup.

Why Puget Sound is a Salmon Fishing Paradise

Beyond the thrill of chinook salmon fishing, Puget Sound offers an unmatched variety of opportunities. Depending on the season, anglers can target not only salmon but also halibut, lingcod, and shellfish. With stunning scenery, strong fishing traditions, and access to the Pacific Ocean just beyond Deception Pass, it’s easy to see why Puget Sound is considered the cradle of sport fishing in Washington.

For us, the trip ended with the perfect combination: fresh halibut and chinook salmon cooked the same day they were caught. Few things capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest better than that.

This adventure took me across the country from my home in North Carolina all the way to the panhandle of Idaho. The mission? To fish the legendary St. Joe River with my buddy Mike from NRS, chasing Cutthroat Trout and maybe even a few bonus bass along the way.

I’ve heard about the St. Joe for years. It’s a blue-ribbon trout fishery, and only a handful of rivers earn that designation. The cutthroat here are wild, plentiful, and absolutely stunning. But what makes this place even more exciting is the water itself. The St. Joe river is fast, clear, and technical. You don’t just stroll in with a fly rod and wade fish every bend. This is big, powerful water, and having the right boat is the only way to unlock it.

The Journey to the St. Joe River

The trip started with a long drive. Through deserts, mountains, and miles of open road. Mike had a boat waiting for us: the Approach 138, a three-person fishing raft designed for rivers just like the St. Joe. We loaded up and drove deep into the mountains north of Moscow, Idaho. The drive itself was worth the trip—snowcapped peaks, pine-covered valleys, and Lake Coeur d’Alene glistening along the way.

nokian tyres and nrs approach 138 raft

By the time we got to the river, it was clear we weren’t in for a casual float. Spring snowmelt had the St. Joe running high and rowdy. Mike, who’s spent decades fishing this river, kept saying, “Let’s go higher, let’s go higher.” My thought was, “Higher means sketchier,” but his logic was that fewer anglers meant less-pressured fish. And, honestly, he wasn’t wrong.

Learning the Water

Day one was more of a scouting mission. We watched insects hatching, checked the color and clarity of the water, and tried to make sense of where fish might hold. The St. Joe was loud, fast, and intimidating—like it had an attitude. But that’s what made it exciting.

When we finally hit the water, it was all about precision. The current didn’t allow for second chances. You’d spot a seam or an eddy, make your cast, and hope the fly landed where it needed to—because once we floated past, there was no going back. As I joked on the river, “It’s like speed dating, but for fishing.” Every little pocket of water was an opportunity, and you had to move quick.

Wild Cutthroat Trout

It didn’t take long before everything clicked. Using my Batson Rain Shadow Eternity 2 nine-foot, five-weight paired with Seaguar Grandmax fluorocarbon tippet, I tied on a simple rabbit-strip sculpin pattern. That’s when the St. Joe came alive.

Hooking into a Westslope Cutthroat in fast water is something special. They’re gorgeous fish with a bright orange slash under the jaw, buttery sides, and a fight that’s all power and current. Landing that first fish was one of those moments where everything comes together: the travel, the boat, the scouting, the teamwork with Mike on the oars.

St. Joe River in Idaho Demands Respect

Over the course of two days, we floated 25-plus miles of river. Up high, the water was splashy and technical, with constant rapids that kept us on edge. Downstream, the St. Joe opened up, slowing its pace and revealing wider runs and gentle bends. It was a river of two personalities—wild and intimidating up high, graceful and forgiving down low.

westslope cutthroat trout fishing st joe

Mike might’ve tried to kill us a few times with his “sketchy water = better fishing” theory, but in the end, the St. Joe delivered. We caught cutthroat after cutthroat, and even got to test the limits of the Approach 138 in some pretty gnarly current.

Westslope Cutthroat Trout Fishing the St. Joe River

Fishing the St. Joe River is an adventure in every sense. It’s not just about catching an amazing fish like the Westslope Cutthroat Trout, it’s about embracing the river’s power, learning its moods, and trusting your team on the boat. For me, it was also about stepping out of my comfort zone. I’ve fished a lot of water across the country, but the St. Joe was unlike anything else.

fishing the st joe river

If you ever get the chance to fish this river, do it. Bring a good boat, a solid buddy on the oars, and be ready for non-stop action. The St. Joe will challenge you, thrill you, and reward you with some of the most beautiful trout you’ll ever hold in your hands.

A recent adventure took me down south to Georgia, where we hit the Georgia Traverse —a rugged backcountry route that’s part dirt roads, part trout streams, and all adventure. The goal? Camp, overland, and chase some hungry rainbow trout with a couple of my longtime buddies.

Joe from Mainline Overland made the trip down to join, and my good friend Eric Estrada came up from Florida. Add in a local guide with a secret honey hole, a few thunderstorms, and some epic campsites, and this trip checked all the boxes.

Why the Georgia Traverse?

I’ve always loved the outdoors—whether it’s fishing, hunting, or just driving my truck down a backroad. The Georgia Traverse had been on my radar for years. It’s the perfect mix of forest service roads, remote camping opportunities, and cold-water streams that are home to wild trout. Eric and I had talked about running the Georgia Traverse it for a long time. So this trip was our chance to finally make it happen.

Getting Local Fly Fishing Intel

Whenever I’m fishing new water, I like to lean on local knowledge. We linked up with Drew Friedrich of Kaha Fishing Company in Blue Ridge, GA.

georgia traverse fly fishing guide

Drew runs a killer fly shop but also knows the streams along the Georgia Traverse like the back of his hand. Drew set us up with the right rig: rubber legs with a San Juan worm dropper, plus some streamers in case the trout got aggressive.

cohutta fly fishing

With rain in the forecast, Drew decided to take us to one of his nearby spots that wouldn’t muddy up as quickly as others. It turned out to be a super-secret honey hole, complete with a hidden trench where trout love to hang.

fly fishing georgia traverse

Of course, fishing in tight quarters with a 9-foot fly rod isn’t easy—you’ve got to master roll casts and even some bow-and-arrow-style casting. But that’s part of the challenge, and when I finally landed a wild juvenile rainbow, it was worth every missed strike.

Weathering the Storm

Georgia weather doesn’t mess around. Midway through the day, a storm rolled in with heavy rain, lightning, and thunder. Luckily, I had been testing out a new app called OnWater, which made it easy to keep an eye on the radar and plan our next moves. We waited out the storm, regrouped, and got back after it.

Finally Hitting the Georgia Traverse

After fishing with Drew, it was time to meet up with Joe from Mainline Overland and set off on the Georgia Traverse. Blue Ridge served as our jumping-off point, and from there we pushed deeper into the woods.

georgia traverse with road trip angler

One of the best parts about fishing along the Georgia Traverse is the camping. We found a prime spot right on the water—plenty of space for our rigs, and even better, a fishing hole just steps from camp. With a four-wheel camper on the back of the truck, it felt like we had a five-star hotel in the middle of the forest.

project camper m on georgia traverse

We set up, cooked dinner, and waited for Eric to roll in after dark. Nothing beats that first night around camp with good friends, good food, and the anticipation of trout fishing at sunrise.

More Trout, More Friends

The next morning, Drew joined us again to walk through some rigs and techniques. Fishing was tough—tight water, tricky casts, and spooky fish—but that’s what makes it so rewarding. After Drew headed back to his shop, we packed up camp and moved on to bigger water he had recommended.

georgia traverse fly fishing with Jameson Redding

That’s when things really started to click. Joe landed a beautiful rainbow, and Eric—who hadn’t caught a trout in years—hooked into one too. Seeing the stoke on their faces reminded me why I love these trips so much.

Frog Hollow Farm

As if the trip couldn’t get better, Eric mentioned a friend of a friend who had access to Frog Hollow Farm, a gorgeous piece of property with private trout water. Not only did they let us fish it, but they also welcomed us to camp there.

That night we capped things off with Taco Tuesday, complete with venison fajitas. Sitting around the fire, swapping stories, and looking forward to another day on the water—those are the moments I live for.

Georgia Overland Trout Fishing

The Georgia Traverse delivered everything I hoped it would: challenging wild trout fishing, rugged overlanding, and unforgettable time spent with friends. The combination of wild trout, remote forest roads, and southern hospitality made this trip one for the books.

If you’re looking for your next adventure—whether it’s with a rod in your hand, behind the wheel of your truck, or around a campfire—the Georgia Traverse has it all.

1. Fish with Local Guide on Smith Mountain Lake

Our journey started with Chad Green from Last Cast Guide Service. Chad has over 30 years of experience fishing Smith Mountain Lake and has been guiding for the better part of a decade. While this lake may not be known for high numbers of fish, it delivers in quality—with plenty of healthy 3–5 lb bass.

Chad shared his favorite techniques, like targeting shady banks with spinnerbaits and chatterbaits, and he even hooked a giant 6 lb largemouth bass during our trip. With both largemouth and smallmouth bass in the lake—not to mention catfish—Smith Mountain Lake is truly a dream for anglers.

2. River Float on the Smith River for Trout

Just a short drive away, we also floated the Smith River in Henry County, near the town of Bassett. The Smith River is a cold-water stream is stocked with brown, rainbow, and brook trout and flows from the Philpott Reservoir. Guided by John and Joel from Mossy Oak Properties, we tested a variety of lures until a classic black rooster tail did the trick. The calm float and trout-filled waters made for a perfect complement to our lake adventure.

Not only did we have John and Joel from Mossy Oak Properties Land and Farm Realty, but we also linked up with Chad Green from Last Cast Guide Service.

Chad has been fishing Smith Mountain Lake for over 30 years and guiding for eight. He emphasized that while it's not a “numbers lake,” it's a “quality fish lake,” with plenty of three to five-pound fish – it doesn't get much better than that for local intel! Whether you prefer jig fishing or other tactics, Smith Mountain Lake fishing offers something for everyone.

Check out Trout Fishing on the Smith River

Beyond the lake, we embarked on a float trip on the Smith River. Just a short drive from the Smith Mountain Lake area, this river is renowned for its incredible trout fishing. Located in Henry County, Virginia, in the town of Bassett, the Smith River is a tailwater coming out of the Philpott Reservoir, ensuring cool water temperatures year-round. This makes it a haven for native brown trout, stocked brook trout, and native and stocked rainbow trout.

Fly Fishing Smith River near Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia

While the fish were a bit tight-lipped early on, a black rooster tail with a gold blade proved to be the winning lure after lunch, a classic bait that has worked for me since childhood.

Tips for Smith Mountain Lake Fishing

Bass (largemouth & smallmouth)

Topwater lures—like frogs and buzzbaits—shine in early morning or late evening due to explosive strikes.

Crankbaits imitate baitfish or crawfish and are effective year-round; vary retrieval for best action.

Jigs, Carolina rigs, drop shots, shaky heads are great around structure and deeper points.

Striped Bass

Early summer, bass feed on bluegill. Fish shallow pockets, dock posts, or shade lines with small worms, grubs, or gliders.

Crappie

Best in early spring (Mar–May) and fall (Oct–Nov), especially near brush piles, docks, or fallen trees.

Catfish

Channel and flatheads are popular and found in coves, particularly in upper Roanoke/Blackwater arms. Use live bait on bottom rigs.

Fishing License

Virginia freshwater license required. Available online via VA DWR, or at marinas and tackle shops.

Fish Limits and Rules

Bass (Largemouth/Smallmouth) Limit

5/day, max 2 under 14″ (statewide).

Striped Bass Limit

June 1–Oct 31: 2/day, no length limit; Nov 1–May 31: 2/day, slot limit 30–40″ must be released.

Bluegill/Sunfish Limit

50/day.

Channel/Flathead Catfish Limit

20/day.

Crappie Limit

25/day.

Muskellunge Limit

2/day, 30″ minimum.

Weather & Seasonal Factors

Early morning and dusk are most productive, especially for topwater lures. Summer midday often too hot/light for stripers.

Shallow fishing for bass is best in spring and early summer; later fish move offshore into deeper structure.

Dress smart: Mornings can be cooler than forecasts—bring layers, hat, sunscreen.

Watch water levels: Fluctuate 1–2 ft regularly and can drop during droughts—impacts accessibility and fish holding structure.

Where to Fish Smith Mountain Lake

Main lake & deep points: Prime for stripers and deep-bass tactics.

Upper coves/brush piles: Prime for crappie and catfish.

Shallow dock areas & pocket backs: Productive for bluegill, bass on nests in May–June .

Smith Mountain Lake State Park: Public boat launch, pier (ADA-accessible), restrooms, muskie and striper stocking points.

Wildlife Management Area (WMA): Public fishing/hiking access along ~10 mi shoreline—permit required.

Hiring a Local Fishing Guide

These seasoned captains are highly rated:

I wanted to share some changes I’ve made to my GMC Sierra Overland Truck build since my last walkthrough. I was on a recent shoot in the Georgia Traverse with the crew from Main Line Overland. From suspension upgrades to full water systems and a killer camp setup, this truck is ready for anything.

Front-End Upgrades

Starting with the front, I added an Addictive Desert Designs bumper. Not only does it look awesome on the GMC Sierra Overland Truck, but it also dramatically improves approach angles with added cutaway. Tucked inside is a 12,000lb Warn winch, just in case things get gnarly (which, luckily, they haven’t yet!).

Lighting has been a major focus—there’s a 50” Baja light bar mounted up top, along with one amber Baja Squadron Pro on either side. These bad boys outperform fog lights off-road and throw serious light into ditches and trailside brush.

Tire & Suspension Overhaul

I swapped in Nokian Outpost nATs—about 20,000 miles on them now, and they’re still quiet and gripping everything I throw at them. The Nokian Outpost are mounted on 17” Icon wheels. The tires are 315/70 R17s, which come out to roughly 34×12.5s.

For the front suspension, I installed Bilstein 6112s and upgraded the upper control arms. This let me squeeze out about an extra inch of lift on top of the factory 2” AT4 lift, which helps the truck clear tougher terrain with confidence.

Nokian Outposts AT tire for off road and overland GMC Sierra with the Four Wheel Camper Project M

Off-Grid Water System & Shower Setup

Water was the next big leap. Enter the Boonedox Raincloud—a 10-gallon pressurizable metal water tank mounted to the roof via a Prinsu rack. Yes, I drilled into the roof of the truck (and didn’t spring a single leak), but it was 100% worth it.

That system feeds into the Joolca Ensuite shower, complete with a hot water heater and shower floor. It's surprisingly private, even has storage for towels, and if you’re in full conserve mode, you can recycle shower water with a hose drain.

I mounted a DECKED case for all my hoses and a portable pump setup. That way, if I’m near a river, I can draw water directly—saving tank water for when I really need it.

Out back, the truck now sports Bilstein 5160s with remote reservoirs and a custom set of heavy-duty leaf springs that add a total of 3” of lift. I’m ditching the old 2” block to clean it up and return to that nice factory rake.

The Prinsu rack up top (technically made for a Silverado, but they’re basically twins) also holds the water tank and can support more lights or gear as needed.

The Full Camp Setup: A Home on Wheels

This GMC Sierra Overland build includes an Alu-Cab 270 awning, which is freestanding and super quick to deploy. I mounted rails all around to support things like the shower, water system, and RotoPax fuel cans. I've also added more Baja S2 Pro flood lights for camp visibility.

In the back, the Project M camper build is dialed in. There’s a roof rack with MaxTrax up top, Overland Solar panel, and inside, a full DECKED drawer system. One side holds a Dometic drop-in dual-burner RV stove—my complete mobile kitchen. The other side is packed with recovery tools, Boxo tool roll, and drill gear.

For propane, I carry a marine-grade fiberglass tank (perfect for my propane outboard motor) and also use it with a LavaBox fire pit and to heat water for the Joolca.

Inside the Camper: Compact Comfort

Inside the Project M, I’m standing on the DECKED platform and only have to slightly duck at 6’. There’s an insulating layer, two MaxxAir fans with rain sensors, and a king-size bed setup with expandable cushions. For solo travel, I sleep sideways and it’s plenty spacious.

Food and beverage storage is handled by the Dometic CFX75, a dual-zone fridge/freezer combo that sips power and stores enough food for days off-grid. It’s been flawless during this trip.

Why the GMC Sierra Truck Works for Overland

This GMC Sierra build has evolved into a capable, comfortable, and self-sufficient overland rig. Whether it's extended off-grid travel or a weekend fishing trip, it handles it all. The modular storage, off-road capability, and comfort upgrades make this truck a real home-on-wheels.

If you're building your own overland rig, or just want a taste of freedom, the GMC Sierra is a platform worth looking at.

There are places that just demand your respect—and the Okefenokee Swamp is one of them. When you paddle into these dark, tannin-stained waters, you quickly realize you’re not at the top of the food chain. It’s wild. It’s ancient. And it’s absolutely full of life.

On this trip, I linked up with my good buddy Chris Funk—also known as “the feral one”—a man who knows this swamp like the back of his hand. Between the gators, thick brush, and unexpected fish bites, it was the kind of kayak fishing trip that keeps you on your toes… and checking over your shoulder.

First Impressions of the Swamp

Before we even got our lines in the water, the Okefenokee swamp was already putting on a show. Logs turned out to be gators. Big ones. Chris and I were dodging reptiles left and right, trying to keep our boats—and ourselves—intact.

We launched into waters that were higher than normal, with ramps submerged and gators lounging in the usual parking spots. It’s wild, raw, and demands your full attention.

The Kayak Fishing Gear and Setup

This trip was the maiden voyage for a new kayak setup, the Sea Eagle FishSup FS1210. I’d already tested the ePropulsion motor, and this was my chance to see how it handled in a real fishing environment. The next day, I planned to swap it out for the Torqeedo Travel Ultralight to do a side-by-side comparison.

Target Species: Bowfin, Jacks, and the Occasional Bass

Our main target was bowfin—a toothy, aggressive species that thrives in this kind of swampy habitat. They’re tough fighters and a ton of fun on the line. But Chris, never one to shy away from excitement, was also chasing chain pickerel and keeping his eyes open for the occasional largemouth bass.

Bowfin are perfect for this type of Okefenokee Swamp water: ambush predators lurking in the shadows, waiting for a spinnerbait or chatterbait to come too close. I had multiple hookups—some solid, some short-lived—and a few heartbreakers right at the boat. That’s just part of the game.

Close Calls and Big Laughs

There’s something different about fishing in a place where the logs move. We joked around a lot, but make no mistake—there were moments of real tension. One gator in particular seemed a little too curious, watching closely as we worked a deep hole near a confluence where the swamp pours into a channel.

It turns out that’s a prime feeding spot—not just for gators, but for fish too. That intersection of moving water and structure produced some of the best bites of the trip. Spinnerbaits slow-rolled across the bottom were money. I was throwing a chatterbait and using Seaguar Smackdown 30 lb braid with a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader, tied up with a double uni knot. It handled the abrasion and power of these fish just fine.

The History and Haunting Beauty of the Okefenokee

Between casts, Chris shared stories of the swamp’s past—about old railroad towns, massive virgin cypress forests, and the doomed attempts to drain it. Places like Billy’s Island, once home to settlers and even a movie theater, are now ghost towns swallowed by the swamp. You feel the weight of history out here, in the silence and the still water.

It’s the kind of place where nature always wins. And that’s exactly why we come.

Okefenokee Fishing Adventure

The Okefenokee Swamp isn’t just another fishing destination—it’s an experience. It’s about the fish, sure, but also about the place, the people, and the wild moments you don’t expect. Like the baby gator that swam right up to Chris. Or the fish that absolutely wrecked my setup just as I was about to net it. Or the one that got away… three times.

If you’re thinking about fishing here, go with someone who knows the swamp. Respect the wildlife. Bring your A-game. And don’t forget to soak in every second of the adventure—because places like this are becoming rarer by the day.

Hey everyone! I’m excited to take you on a virtual journey to one of my all-time favorite fishing spots: Pamlico Sound. Located on the beautiful eastern shore of North Carolina. I recently had the chance to reconnect with my buddy Eric Crause and our local guide, Captain Bryan DeHart, to dive deep into what makes Pamlico Sound fishing a unique experience.

What Makes Pamlico Sound Unique?

pamlico sound fishing

Pamlico Sound is a stunningly vast estuary, encompassing over 3,000 square miles of water. It’s fed by the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers and boasts several inlets connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean. This unique combination creates a rich ecosystem that supports a wide variety of fish species. From trophy red drum to speckled trout, Pamlico Sound is a haven for anglers.

When I first started fishing Pamlico Sound about a decade ago, I was immediately drawn to its rich biodiversity and the abundant fishing opportunities. The seasonal patterns here are fascinating; for example, winter brings trout up the rivers and into the creeks, making for some excellent fishing from November through March. As the weather warms up, the trout migrate back out, and big drum fishing really takes off.

Key Fish Species in Pamlico Sound

  • Red Drum: Known for their size and fighting spirit, red drum are abundant, particularly in the fall.
  • Speckled Trout: Best caught in the early morning or late afternoon, particularly around grass beds.
  • Flounder: A favorite among anglers, flounder fishing is best in the warmer months.
  • Bluefish: Known for their aggressive nature, bluefish can be found throughout the sound.
  • Striped Bass: Known for their powerful swimming, fishing for striped bass often involves casting near rocky shorelines or inlets.

Local Knowledge is Key

One of the best pieces of advice I can offer any angler is to connect with a local guide. Captain Bryan DeHart has lived in the Manteo area his entire life, and he knows the ins and outs of Pamlico Sound like the back of his hand. His expertise was invaluable as we explored the shoreline. We were casting into spots where bait was jumping and birds were diving—classic signs of an active fishery. Captain DeHart recommends using Rainshadow Rod Blanks and building a custom trout rod for fishing Pamlico Sound. A medium action slow pitch Rainshadow Rod Blank with 10 pound braid and a top water lure will crush the speckled trout and redfish.

During our time out on the water, I was reminded of how important it is to really observe the environment around you. Sometimes, the water will tell you where the fish are hiding. Even on days when we hadn’t yet caught anything, I felt that unmistakable excitement that comes from knowing you’re in a productive area.

The Fishing Experience

speckled trout pamlico sound

We set out early in the morning, eager to hit the outer shoreline of Pamlico Sound. The tranquility of the sound was mesmerizing, and as we drifted along, we experimented with different fishing techniques. Topwater fishing is a favorite of mine, especially when targeting speckled trout and redfish. The thrill of seeing a fish explode on your lure is unmatched!

Tips for Fishing in Pamlico Sound

Variety of Fishing Setups Used Through the Day

We employed various setups throughout the day. We were using popping corks, jigs, and topwater lures to see what the fish were interested in. Top water baits like the Spook Jr. worked well early in the morning and late in the day while soft plastic shrimp imitations under a popping cork seemed to entice the bite best when the sun became higher in the sky. Jig, soft plastic swim baits like the Z-Man Diezel Minnowz rigged on a 1/8 oz jig head, also performed well for the speckled and grey trout.

Discovering the Perfect Spot for Smallmouth Bass

As an avid angler and host of Road Trip Angler, the unpredictable weather often follows me, creating unique challenges for every fishing trip. After a massive storm hit North Carolina, I had to venture away from home to find water that hadn't been heavily affected. This led me to a lesser-frequented area still teeming with one of my favorite catches: smallmouth bass. We used the NRS Approach 120 fishing raft to take us up river to the right spot.

Preparation and Gear

Before setting out, I equipped myself with the NRS Approach Fishing Raft. Having previously reviewed and spent some time with it, I knew this was the perfect scenario to truly showcase its capabilities. The raft floats high and shallow, handling riffles and mild whitewater with ease. Its spacious design allows for ample gear storage, making it ideal for two anglers ready to tackle the river.

Hitting the River

Accompanied by my friend Steven, we set off for the river, aiming for a spot near the base of a dam known for its productivity. As we navigated upstream, the raft proved its worth, gliding over shallow waters and exposed rocks. Despite some initial challenges with line management and the rocky terrain, the stability and fishability of the raft were impressive.

The Fishing Experience

Splitting up to cover more ground, I found myself exploring a quieter section of the river. Switching to a fly for a more subtle presentation, I soon landed the first smallmouth bass of the day. The excitement of catching my first fish on a fly in this setting was unmatched.

Steven, fishing in a different spot, also had success, though he lost a few lures along the way. Determined to support each other, I navigated the raft over rocks and around bends to bring him new baits. While Steven re-tied his lines, I couldn’t resist making a few casts in his spot, immediately hooking a solid smallmouth. Despite the lack of photographic evidence, the thrill of the catch was undeniable.

Reflecting on the Day

As the day progressed, we both caught several smallmouth bass, with the biggest reaching 18 inches. Even though some moments went undocumented, the shared experience and the joy of fishing together made it a memorable trip. The NRS Approach Fishing Raft had proven to be an excellent companion, enhancing our ability to navigate the river and fish effectively.
