Hey there, Emily Jackson here, sharing another chapter of our Great Family Adventure. This time, we found ourselves in the charming city of Columbus, Georgia, for an epic event—the World Championships for Freestyle Kayaking! As seasoned kayakers, my husband Nick and I were thrilled to be back on the competition scene, but this trip wasn’t just about paddling; it was about family, fun, and exploring the hidden gems Columbus has to offer.

The Buzz of the World Championships

As soon as we arrived in Columbus, you could feel the excitement in the air. Athletes from all over the world had gathered, ready to compete and push the limits of freestyle kayaking. The competition was fierce, but the camaraderie even stronger. It’s not just about winning; it’s about sharing the river and the love for the sport with fellow kayakers, many of whom we’ve trained with or coached over the years.

While Nick and I were both chasing another world title, it was amazing to see the next generation, including our kids Tucker and Parker, being part of this vibrant paddling community. Even though the competition was intense, the real win for us was spending time together as a family.

A Family Reunion by the River

One of the best parts of being in Columbus was the chance to reunite with our extended family. Both sets of grandparents joined us for the event, making it a full-on family adventure.

We checked into the beautiful Hotel Indigo, which became our home base for the week. The kids were absolutely thrilled to be staying in the same hotel as their grandparents, and we made the most of our downtime by lounging by the pool and enjoying some much-needed relaxation.

One of the standout features of Hotel Indigo was its rooftop view of the river. Seeing the river from that vantage point gave us a whole new appreciation for its beauty and power, and it was the perfect spot to unwind after a day on the water.

Fun and Learning at Oxbow Meadows

Our adventure wasn’t all about kayaking—we took some time to explore the local attractions, too. One of our favorite stops was the Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center.

columbus georgia animals

The kids loved getting hands-on with science and nature, from meeting a baby alligator to learning about dragonflies. It was a fun and educational experience that blended perfectly with our homeschooling on the road.

A Sweet Adventure: Columbus’ Best Donut Shops

No family trip would be complete without indulging in some local treats, and Columbus, Georgia didn’t disappoint. We set out on a mission to find the best donuts in town, hitting up three of the top spots: Golden Donuts, Best Donuts, and Columbus Donuts. The kids had a blast tasting and ranking each one. While Parker held firm that Best Donuts was his favorite, the rest of us crowned Golden Donuts as the winner, thanks to their amazing cinnamon twists.

Thrills and Spills on the Zip Line

columbus georgia family adventure

One of the coolest experiences Columbus has to offer is the zip line that crosses state borders. That’s right—you start in Georgia and zip over to Alabama, and then back again!

zipline columbus georgia

It was a thrilling ride for the whole family, and Parker especially showed some serious courage tackling the high ropes course. Watching her face her fears and zip across the river was one of the highlights of the trip.

Paddling, Competing, and Community

Back at the competition, the stakes were high. We made it through the preliminary rounds, and it was exhilarating to see how far we could go. Even though the competition was tough, the paddling community remained as close-knit as ever. After each day’s heats, we’d gather with friends, sharing stories and grilling out. For me, that’s one of the best parts of this lifestyle—the friendships we build both on and off the water.

Wrapping Up a Memorable Week

As the event came to a close, we reflected on what an amazing week it had been. Sure, we were there to compete, but more importantly, we got to spend quality time with family, explore a new city, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Whether we’re chasing world titles or just enjoying the journey, it’s moments like these that remind us why we love this wild, wonderful life.

Thanks for following along with us on our great family adventure in Columbus, Georgia! Until next time, keep exploring and cherishing those family moments.

When it comes to outdoor family adventures, Quebec’s Outaouais and Laurentides regions offer some of the most stunning landscapes, exciting activities, and memorable experiences. From biking scenic trails to paddling beautiful lakes and rivers, our family had the opportunity to explore these incredible regions together, and it was nothing short of spectacular.

Exploring the Outaouais Region

Our adventure began in the Outaouais, where the rolling hills and dense forests set the perfect backdrop for outdoor fun. One of the highlights of the region is Gatineau Park, a true gem for anyone who loves nature. With over 360 square kilometers of wilderness, we had the chance to enjoy hiking and biking on well-maintained trails, all while soaking in breathtaking views.

We spent a lot of time biking through the park, which was an easy way to keep the whole family active and engaged. The trails were perfect for all skill levels, and with so many options, we were able to choose routes that suited our pace. Whether you're an avid cyclist or a casual rider, the paths winding through Gatineau Park offer something for everyone.

For water lovers, we highly recommend paddling along one of the many lakes and rivers in the Outaouais. Renting canoes or kayaks and getting out on the water was a peaceful way to connect with nature while still enjoying family time. Our kids loved paddling, and it gave us the chance to spot wildlife along the shorelines, making the experience even more special.

Into the Laurentides Region

montebello Outaouais and Laurentides

As we moved into the Laurentides, the landscape changed but the adventure continued. The Laurentides are known for their beautiful mountains and clear, freshwater lakes. One of the must-visit places here is Mont-Tremblant National Park. The park has everything from hiking and paddling to rock climbing and camping, making it an ideal location for outdoor-loving families.

We chose to hike some of the shorter, family-friendly trails. The paths were perfect for younger kids, and we were rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. In the fall, the colors of the leaves are vibrant, turning the forests into a painter's palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s truly a magical time to visit.

outdoor activities Outaouais and Laurentides

The Laurentides also gave us a chance to enjoy some camping. This time it was different as instead of having to set up a tent, we rented a Yurt! The kids loved the unique space with the wood stove—helping gathering firewood, and, of course, roasting marshmallows.

Why We Love Adventuring in Quebec

One of the things that stood out the most during our time in Quebec was how accessible these outdoor activities are. Whether you’re looking to get on the water, hike through the woods, or bike along scenic trails, the Outaouais and Laurentides regions have it all. The parks and facilities are family-friendly, making it easy to navigate the area with kids.

SUP Quebec province

Another thing I love is how these regions offer something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you're a seasoned adventurer or just looking to enjoy some time outside with your family; you’ll find plenty of opportunities to connect with nature and make lasting memories. The Outaouais and Laurentides are the perfect places to explore together.

For our family, these adventures in Quebec were about more than just the activities themselves. It was about spending quality time outdoors, discovering new places, and enjoying every moment of it. The beauty of these regions, combined with the wide variety of things to do, makes them a top destination for anyone looking to have a great family adventure. Our adventure started in Amman, Jordan's vibrant capital city. After a long flight, we found ourselves greeted warmly at the luxurious W Amman Hotel, where modern comforts met traditional hospitality. Amman's bustling markets, ancient citadels, and delectable cuisine made our stay here truly memorable. Exploring the city's blend of ancient ruins and modern cafes provided a perfect introduction to Jordan's diverse culture.

Next on our itinerary was a journey to Petra, the ancient Nabatean city hidden amidst rose-red cliffs. Our base at the Petra Moon Luxury Hotel placed us right at the entrance to this UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the narrow Siq and catching our first glimpse of the iconic Treasury left us in awe, feeling like characters in our very own adventure movie. Exploring the ancient tombs and amphitheater with our kids was a history lesson they'll never forget.

Top Family Adventures in Banff

This January my family was fortunate to visit the Banff and Lake Louise area of Calgary. When my Husband Nick said he wanted our kids to really experience winter and what the season has to offer, I could have gone either way. Someone who historically always chooses sand over snow, we hadn’t spent much time in winter. These photos and videos taken on our shoot will show what we thought were the top family adventures in Banff Alberta, Canada!

Sleigh ride fun.

I can’t think of any other place I would want go get the full introduction. From the snow laden trees and white capped mountains, to the long list of activities: Learning to skate, cross country ski, dog sled, the dynamics of ice sculptures, my family packed a lifetime of firsts into a few days.

Dog sled ride has to be a bucket list activity.

As animal lovers our favorite activity was the dog sledding, but something about being tucked away in a cabin the woods really brought my family together.

Between cabins and fires in flannel, to hotels that felt like castles, I couldn't get over the options and opportunities each day presented.

My family absolutely loves the Laurentians and the Outaouais; both are regions in Québec, Canada. And today, I’m going to be sharing with you five of our favorite family activities in Québec to do as a family to hopefully give you some inspiration for your next trip.

Parc Omega

Number one is Parc Omega in the Outaouais region. And Parc Omega is essentially just a tremendous park with countless animal species. Kids typically love to visit zoos and parks to see what different wildlife they can observe and learn about. But at the Parc Omega, things are a little different.

Autumn activities in Quebec for families has to include Parc Omega!
Family activities in Québec has to include Parc Omega!

Parc Omega is a very large, open space that covers lots of acres. And you sort of go on a safari by driving through the park in your own vehicle. Doing this safari-type experience was a first for my kids and let me tell you, they were engaged the entire time as animals were coming straight up to the car.

Omega Park has around 400 animals from North America including animals like deer and caribou. You’ll truly be surprised at how large these animals are and how close you get to them. Understandably, the park doesn't allow you to leave your vehicle. But in all honesty, you wouldn’t want to.

Another bonus of Parc Omega that puts it up there as one of our favorite spots in Québec is the park’s food and lodging. On one of the evenings, we stayed in the Wolf and Bear suite. It was basically a chalet-style house with your own private animal viewing area that allows you to see wolves and bears right from your bedroom.

There was also the chance to stay in a tipi-style, which is another cool interactive experience. You will need to take all your equipment over to the tipi in a wagon. But once you’re there, you’ll get to make fires to keep warm, and you’ll be greeted by deer when you wake up in the morning.

Hiking in Quebec gets you to some incredible views for family favorite activities in Quebec Canada
Hiking is a great choice for family activities in Québec

Family Hiking in Québec

The second of our favorite family activities in Québec is a general one. But it's hiking and exploring parks throughout the area. When in Québec, we visited a few different parks. However, our favorite was definitely Mont-Tremblant National Park in the Laurentians. That’s mainly thanks to the park’s views and the various waterways that are dotted throughout the area.

My family really loves water. So, seeing pristine lakes everywhere we looked was truly a highlight of our trip. The forest at Mont-Tremblant also felt very old and peaceful. And it was a fantastic experience being able to appreciate the old trees and all the foliage.

While hiking through the park, we did get to see some waterfalls, creeks, and streams. And our kids learned all about different tree species and how to differentiate them from one another.

For one of the hikes, we even went on a guided tour with a company called D-tour, which is something we’d never actually done before. The guided hike was fantastic. So, that is something I highly recommend as we learned so much about the Canadian Shield, the rock formations in Québec, and what actually caused the formations in the first place.

and yes, the kids loved the chocolate store!
One of our favorite family activities in Québec is the chocolate store

ChocoMotive, Montebello

Now, this one wasn’t my top activity. But it definitely was for my kids. And that’s the ChocoMotive in Montebello.

The ChocoMotive made it onto our top five simply because it was really engaging for the kids. We learned a lot about chocolate and the science behind it. And we not only got to understand what to look for when eating chocolate. But my kids also got a hands-on experience by making their own chocolate with the help of chocolate molds.

Parker right at home with the apples. Apple picking is one of our family favorite activities in Quebec Canada
Apple picking is a fun family activity in Québec, Parker right at home with the apples.

Apple Picking in Québec

Number four on my list of favorite family activities in Québec is apple picking, as I’ve always had a deep appreciation of orchards and fruit trees. Before our trip to Québec, I’d never actually gone to an apple orchard before. So it was so fun seeing trees that were loaded with fruit from top to bottom. Note that this activity can only be done at harvest, in the fall.

We spent our day at the orchard picking Macintosh apples. And it was a really unique experience for our kids as they got to inspect the apples and choose which ones they were going to pick.

The food on our Québec trip overall was tremendous. But the picnic we had in the orchard was by far one of our most memorable meals. The picnic experience includes a picnic basket with foods like salmon, salads, bread, and, of course, different items that the orchard made from the its very own apples.

It was great to show the kids the evolution of the apples, from their rawest form on the trees to all the amazing things that we can make with them.

Le Sentier de Cimes... amazing lookout!
Le Sentier de Cimes… an amazing lookout that is a fun family activity in Québec

Sentier des cimes

Up fifth on our favorite family activities in Québec list is the Sentier des cimes. The Sentier des cimes was once a fish hatchery in the Laurentians region. However, today, it has been completely transformed into a magnificent boardwalk that winds its way through the treetops.

Partway through the boardwalk, you’ll also come across a tower that gives you incredible views of the area and the sunset. During our time at Sentier des cimes, we got to witness the very first fall sunset making its way down past the bright fall foliage—a memory we won’t ever forget.

Plus, as Sentier des cimes is so accessible, it’s even suitable for wheelchair users, the elderly, and young kids. So definitely check it out if you want some incredible views of the entire Laurentians region.

Parker loves her NRS SUP! Water activities in the summer months are always a family favorite activity in Quebec Canada
Family activities in Québec include Stand Up Paddleboarding, Parker loves her NRS SUP!

Bonus Activites

I know I said I was only going to do five. But this area has so many things to offer that it’s hard to narrow it down to just a handful.

Canoeing and Stand-up Paddle Boarding

Everyone knows that when my family visits a new place, water sports are at the top of our activity list. And while visiting Québec, we got involved with canoeing and stand up paddle boarding.

Canoeing, in particular, was really nice as we could just rent a canoe and navigate the water as we pleased. So, its ease, convenience, and accessibility just made the canoeing experience even better.

Stand-up paddle boarding was also fun, as although Nick and I have spent countless hours on stand-up paddle boards, our son, Tucker, had not. We got to watch Tucker push himself and gain his confidence on the board. And by the end of it, he had mastered his technique and was truly enjoying the experience.

family favorite activities in Quebec Canada include biking

Biking in Québec

Biking is another of our favorite autumn activities in Québec, as the Laurentians is a big biking region. Parker, my daughter, has really got into biking recently. So, our trip to Québec was our first trip where she got to take her own bike and fully join in on the adventure.

As a parent watching her find her independence and her freedom was something I’ll remember for a lifetime.

Today, I’m going to be sharing my favorite parts of the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado. Because for those of you who don’t know, Great Family Adventure is all about empowering and educating people on the topic of getting your family outside and exploring.

The GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, is a special event for my family because I’ve been visiting the games since when my father used to compete 16 years ago. Now, I compete each year. So for us, the games are a lot like coming home.

GoPro Mountain Games are hosted every year in Vail

We Love Vail, Colorado

As a family, we adventure a lot, and we travel a ton. But the games are one place we’ve consistently gone back to almost every year. And one of my favorite things about visiting the games is actually visiting the town of Vail itself. Outside of winter, many people don’t actually realize how many fun activities Vail has on offer.

Vail has kayaking, biking, hiking, and a ton of fun stores. And not to mention, with it being summer, a lot of the restaurants are more affordable. It’s just an awesome place to visit.

Some of these athletes are amazing to watch!

You Get to See So Many Professional Athletes

Another thing we love about the GoPro Mountain games is the fact that you get to see so many professional athletes. Although I'm a professional kayaker, when I go to the games, I actually take time to go and watch other sports. I can watch the World Cup for bouldering or watch dog jumping, for example.

The Spartan mud race is for everyone!

There’s definitely something for anyone that wants to challenge themselves. Whether you’re after a more intense event or something the average Joe can enjoy, the Mountain Games has it all.

Lots of on water events at the GoPro Mountain Games

Obviously, the kayaking events, for me, are the highlights of the mountain games. And when I go there, I have so many different events all in one weekend. One year, for instance, I did like five different kayaking events. And if you are an athlete, you’ll know that there are very few places where you can go for one discipline and have a ton of activity all weekend long.

Vendors like LavaBox are here in droves.

Vendors at the Mountain Games

Visiting some of the vendors is also a huge highlight for me. During the Mountain Games, there are a ton of different tents and booths to look around. You can learn about individual brands. You can sample products. You can get free products. You can buy products. You can try new drinks. There’s just all sorts, and the engagement that these brands have with people just walking down the street is really fun.

Being able to walk to the town, stop in the booths, and check out the different products really adds an extra element to the event.

GoPro has created an incredible festival environment with entertainment and activities for the whole family.

GoPro is There

One thing that’s really special about the GoPro Mountain Games is having GoPro there. GoPro is such an easy way for us to capture content and memories, especially in scenarios where our other camera equipment would get ruined.

The mud run at the games, for example, is an event I’d take my GoPro because I’d never take my phone. It’s one of those events where the GoPro can definitely handle whatever we’re going to get into. But all of my other camera equipment wouldn't. So I have years of memories participating in the events, all thanks to my GoPro.

Can't get this shot with a normal camera. GoPro's have captured many a crazy moment like this.

Also, I love that at the games, GoPro themselves capture a ton of content. So while I’m capturing us in the mud or splashing in the river, GoPro is getting us from a different angle. After the event, you can see recaps on their social media feed. And it just makes me feel really involved.

Surrounded by Passion

They always say that you should surround yourself with great people, and that’s the beauty of the Mountain Games. At the GoPro Mountain Games, you’re surrounded by some of the most passionate, enthusiastic, and committed people you’ll ever meet.

So if you’re wondering whether or not you need to visit the games, you definitely should! Come visit us there in Vail, Colorado, because the Mountain Games is a great opportunity to be surrounded by some of the best people who love the outdoors and are pushing themselves to the max.

Family Fun in Ocean City Maryland

Today I’m going to share with you five of my family’s favorite things to do when visiting Ocean City. And as each of us came up with something different as we all enjoyed individual experiences, activities, and adventures, you’ll have a diverse list of Ocean City attractions that may appeal to you and your family.

A marshmallow roast is favorite things to do in ocean city... well, anywhere!

Staying in a Cottage

For me, the number one thing I loved most about Ocean City was the fact that we rented a cottage. I got to open the door and walk straight out onto the beach. So that was definitely the highlight of my entire trip, just being able to enjoy the beauty and the scenery of the ocean.

Jolly Roger action!

Jolly Rogers

When I asked my son, Tucker, what his favorite thing to do in Ocean City is, he said ride the rides at Jolly Rogers. Jolly Rogers is an amusement park in Ocean City. And although Tucker was at first nervous about riding the roller coasters, by the end of the day, he was riding all of them. So not only did he enjoy the experience, but he also overcame his fears.

Kite flying on the beach instantly became a favorite. Check out that grin!

Flying Kites

My daughter Parker’s favorite thing to do in Ocean City was flying kites. Flying kites is a popular thing to do in Ocean City. And there are huge stores that sell hundreds and hundreds of different styles of kites. When we were in Maryland, it was quite windy. So the kids got to pick out their special kites and then spend time flying them, which was obviously the activity that stood out most to Parker on our trip.

Jetski's are for rent everywhere here in Ocean City.

Jet skiing

Nick’s favorite part about Ocean City—no surprise to me—was jet skiing. During our time in Maryland, Nick absolutely loved having the opportunity to get on a jet ski. And he also loved watching the kids have fun on them too. Parker especially was so enthusiastic, which made it a really big win.

Nick did get to rip around by himself. So I think for him, he just really enjoyed being on something motorized out in the ocean—that’s kind of Nick’s style.

No adventure for us is complete without kayaking.
No family fun adventure for us is complete without kayaking.

Kayaking

And the final favorite Ocean City activity that we would all agree on—because my whole family loves it—is kayaking. We went kayaking inside the Marsh Bay Area of Ocean City. And it was a really special experience because it was incredibly educational. We learned all about the ecosystem and the environment. And then, on top of that, we saw an eagle. So it was really great for all of us to be out on the water together. Our trip to Ocean City Maryland was filled with family fun!

Let me kick off this blog by mentioning I may seem a touch biased because I LOVE rivers, as a kayaker and a mother. The ability to be in a down town atmosphere and get to enjoy the whitewater of the Rush South Whitewater Park has my cup overflowing without even considering all the other Columbus Georgia family activities.

The park by the river in Columbus Georgia, during the event, was home to many a kayaker and made for a fun festive environment

Columbus Georgia Lodging

We travel full time in our Truck Trailer combo, and Columbus has great RV Parks and options just outside of town.  The two RV Parks that are closest to downtown are Lake Pines and Camp David. As kayakers they have an option for parking along the river at the Piggly Wiggly on 13th St. Piggly Wiggly living isn’t for everyone but it’s amazing that the community has made the whitewater park so accessible.

For most I would highly recommend one of the dozen hotels right down-town, the Hampton, Marriott, Indigo, all are great options with varying price points. Most have pools and other great amenities. If you want to go the Airbnb route- there are a ton as it’s a college town and a military town, so lots of visitors and a ton of options within walking distance to the main street: Broadway.

Food in Columbus

I cant do a trip report without mentioning food… Food is a big part of our “vacations” and trips as I truly enjoy exploring new restaurants. Broadway has a ton of restaurant options, from Greek, Pizza, Mexican, Sushi, you name it. Our personal favorites as a family are:

Simple Greek- Light and easy to build your own bowl so the kids can personalize.

Columbus Georgia has some crazy cool venues for family meals to be found everywhere
Some crazy cool venues for family meals to be found everywhere in Columbus Georgia!

Banks Food Hall: the Poke Bowls are next level in the Food Hall and I could eat there every day if possible. The food hall also has a unique hot dog stand with odd variations of hot dogs including a BLT Hot Dog. The Mexican place is delicious very fresh and has the best nachos. The Ice Cream place mixes soft serve and sorbets so the kids asked for Ice Cream non stop, but Mom and Dad had problems saying No as we really enjoyed it as well.

Farm to Table

11th and Bay: Farm to Table (mostly local ingredients) This is a good date night or dressy dinner place. It has the very best Table Biscuits, Scallop and cut in house steaks. I would say more about the menu but as its local they have to change it often to match what’s in season.

Pizza

Your Pie: Build your own Pizza place, I have to mention it because it has gluten free crusts and dairy free cheese- so for me this was a huge win!

Dessert and Snacks

Veri Best Donuts- Do I need to say more? They have the most unique donuts, from Cinnamon Crunch or Fruity Pebbles ones, to Croissant Donuts? So much yum!

Columbus GA has a LOT of great food options, especially for the creative food bowl builders!

A Classic: The Dinglewood Pharmacy

Dinglewood Pharmacy: Yes it’s a pharmacy but it’s also a historical diner that is still serving food that the whole family will love, BLT’s Chicken Fingers, burgers and more. What makes this place special is the Scrambled Dog, served since the beginning, it has been served to celebrities including Prince Charles. The Scrambled Dog is a hot dog, with chili, oyster crackers and pickles. But don’t stop there- you can customize your Scrambled Dog with fritos, hot peppers, cheese and more. I was shocked (and a little scared) when I saw people creating their scrambled dogs but it was shockingly yummy…

Biscuits

Iron Bank: If you love biscuits, go to Iron Bank and get the Sweet Potato Biscuit or Herb. Both are absolutely delicious. They have great coffee, beer, sandwiches, salads and pastries. They also have pies and cobblers almost every day and I love to support them as they are very kind to the local homeless population.

Smoothies

Ride On Smoothies: Need some super greens or fresh pressed juice? They have a wide range of fresh juice and smoothies including Acai Bowls. I am an avid juice and wheatgrass drinker so I appreciated the clean juice after donuts and scrambled dogs.

Beer Tasting

Maltitude:  Beer tasting anyone? A beer shop with a serious selection! You can order glasses on tap, or simply shop. We ended up trying beers as unique as a Pickle Beer, and yes it tasted like pickle juice and beer in one glass!

Columbus Family Activities

Rush South Whitewater Park: If you want to go Whitewater Kayaking, this Whitewater Park is World Class! So much so that they are hosting the World Championships for Freestyle Kayaking in October, 2023. If you don’t kayak, you can raft, ducky or more by checking out Whitewater Express who offers a wide variety of activities. You can also rent flatwater kayaks for below the whitewater or take a Fly Fishing lesson.

Columbus Georgia space center was a WOW for the kids
The Columbus Georgia Space Center was a WOW for the kids

Museums

Columbus State University Coca-Cola Space Science Center

Say that 5 times fast! This place is GREAT for any kid that shows any interest in space, otherwise it’s a great educational center that has a ton of interactive shows, games and staff. My kids arrived with dozens of questions and left with a much more in depth understanding on not only what’s going on in Space, but travel and exploration of it as well.

Columbus Collective Museum

If you want to see 7 Museums under 1 roof, go check this place out. It has a full antique shop vibe (and it is an antique shop too). Our kids enjoyed making the Phonograph work, and the Lunch Box Museum. The Lunch Box Museum was a highlight for me as it has over 2,500 boxes and it was VERY cool to see what we popular throughout certain years.

Biking in Columbus Georgia

Riverwalk

The Dragonfly Trail System connects miles of River Walk and down town Columbus to give you a safe biking route for you and your littles. We enjoyed biking up and down the walk, but I also appreciated the walk for my morning walks- with a quick stop at Iron Bank for coffee : )

Sunset happens to hit the walk just right so if you prefer to walk in the afternoon- you’ll get beautiful evening lighting over the water.

Standing Boy Park

This is a short drive away but has to be mentioned. It has EPIC mountain biking trails and running trails. I went there as often as I could as there are easy to hard trails for miles and a ton of wildlife. Twice now I have seen wild armadillos!

Lots of great biking trails to be had in Columbus Ga.

Ziplining and High Ropes

Whitewater Express also offers Ziplining (it’s the only zip-line that crosses states) and a High Ropes course. Our kids were nervous to approach the Zipline this trip but we are excited to make it happen when we come back. The High Ropes course is step by step so it was great for the whole family and comfort levels. This was one of our favorite Columbus family activities!

There was non stop biking in Columbus Georgia
There was non stop biking when we weren't on the water.

Other Activities to Try

Rocket Fizz: This is an activity and food in one. If you love different specialty chocolates or candy, you must go. Fair warning they do have massive lollypops that cost $50, so be warned. My kids spent almost an hour choosing which candy they wanted.

Playground: Outside of WW Express or the Banks Food Hall is an epic playground. In the summer time it also has a splash pad.

Yoga: Multiple Yoga Studios including River Flow – sometimes Mom or Dad may need some solo bendy time and this studio is in a gorgeous location:

Best Time to Visit Columbus Georgia

You can visit Columbus, GA all year round, for water Columbus family activities I recommend March- November. But otherwise the town is well set up to be a year round destination. It is also worth checking out which months they have their weekly farmers markets, concerts, and other fun events!

My thirst for adventure and parents style is deeply impacted by trips to Africa. My son Tucker has joined me in Zambia, my husband and I have gone a dozen times together. This has lent to think a lot of Uganda and family life. I recently visited Uganda solo and was reminded of one of my favorite quotes:

“I never knew of a Morning in Africa when I woke up and was not Happy.” Ernest Hemingway.

There is truth in this quote, not matter how many times I have visited the dark continent, I am deeply happy each morning.

The connection between Uganda and Family has always been important
The connection between Uganda and Family has always been important

Visiting the Bujagali District, Uganda

The things we take for granted are a luxury where I visit.. I often visit Bujagali District in Uganda and I am not often met with running water or flushing toilets, or electricity.

There is an element of Adventure by just being in this environment. Observing the people, their way of life, there is so much understanding and appreciate for simplicities, and life.

The People of Uganda

In Uganda, most of the people, regardless of situations approach to life is to enjoy and showcase joy in present moments. They don’t carry the strains of their limitations or stressors into the present moment conversations or engagements- they are appreciative of that MOMENT with you. It reminds you how valuable a moment is. Often I will be talking to a person who I later find out is battling HIV, Malaria and other illnesses all while laughing and smiling with me.

Uganda has a very different take on the world, so do most cultures
Uganda has a very different take on the world, so do most cultures

When I talk to them about their resilience they ask me what complaining about their strain will do? “How will it help to talk about that?”

To me this conversation reminds me that when we present ourselves as being strong because we “overcame” we are therefore underestimating or not considering that everyone else has a battle that we may no nothing about. Why cant we celebrate our wins, our joys without it being as a result of, or I overcame this… If you know in your heart what you’ve overcome, then what difference does it make over vocalizing it?

When I am in Africa, I am reminded of the beauty and simplicity of being alive.

My kids have connected with children across the globe

Some Reminders I get from Traveling to Uganda

These reminders influence my parenting style and how I approach life with my kids.

  • Never take time with those you love for granted
  • You may not be able to choose your circumstances in some scenarios, but you ALWAYS choose your outlook
  • Celebrate Wins, no matter how small, life alone is meant to be celebrated.
  • Trust your ability to overcome challenges, we are only stronger after conflict. Everyone has resilience, you just need to practice
  • Practice Gratitude
  • Be Kind.

If you are ever in a place that you feel things are taken for granted, gratitude isn’t coming easy and reflection is needed. Consider a trip to Uganda. There are also dozens of Non Profits doing good work in this country and taking that time to invest into others will leave your cup overflowing, not to mention all the potential good you can do.

Working with a Non-Profit Organization Abroad

Here are some pointers when deciding how to approach a Non Profit or working in a 3rd World Country:

  • Do your research- Often Non-Profits that coming in with power and money and don’t listen to the needs or approach into African Culture. Find out which ones are long lasting and have a good reputation.
  • “When you enter a Man’s home remember you are deaf and dumb” This is very important when entering a new culture, how can you truly learn about the culture if you are too busy trying to influence. If you want to make actual change you must learn the truths of the culture and community you are in.
  • You demean money’s value when you just give it away. Often you will be approach “Muzungu give me money” this is something I hear often in the field. The quote you “give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach a man to fish he eats for a year.” This is very true and very important to remember.
  • Find something you are passionate about. There are so many avenues, childcare, special needs, health care, malnutrition, water quality, garden projects, domestic violence, family planning and more.

I hope this article brings a reminder to Smile- Life is beautiful wherever you are whatever your realities may be.

“If I have ever seen magic, its been in Africa.” – John Hemingway

Things to do in Florida with Kids https://Hazeadventure.com/things-to-do-in-florida-with-kids/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=things-to-do-in-florida-with-kids https://Hazeadventure.com/things-to-do-in-florida-with-kids/#respond Mon, 06 Mar 2023 20:37:05 +0000 https://Hazeadventure.com/?p=6517 There are so many things to do in Florida with kids and I’m here to share four of my favorites.

There are so many things to do in Florida with kids and I’m here to share four of my favorites.

Beaches in Florida are amazing!

One of the best things to do in Florida with kids is... well, hit the beach!
One of the best things to do in Florida with kids is… well, hit the beach!

One of the top things to do in Florida with kids is to visit the beach. You just can’t ignore the beaches in Florida as there are so many different styles and types of beaches all across the state.

If you’re planning on visiting Florida, you definitely need to do some research. The beaches are beautiful and amazing and they’ll most likely be one of your kids' highlights. My kids no matter what we do, no matter how amazing it always seems to be, talk the most about going to the beach.

Searching for sea shells is one of the things to do in Florida with kids
Searching for sea shells is one of the things to do in Florida with kids

One of my personal favorite things to do in Florida with kids is to go hunting for seashells. If you didn’t already know, because I didn’t, Fort Myers is actually the capital of seashells throughout the world. I didn’t even know a seashell capital existed until doing a little bit of research, but when you’re there you’re literally walking on some of the most beautiful shells I’ve ever seen. Seashell hunting is something the whole family can do, so when visiting Florida, check out Sanibel Island in Fort Myers.

Visit the Florida Springs

Another of the things to do in Florida with kids is to check out the springs. There are so many independent springs to choose from all across Florida, and all are different and unique. On one of my family's first trips to Florida, we got hooked on the springs. And now we don’t visit Florida without exploring one.

Manatee watching is incredible in the Florida Springs and very accessible by kayak or SUP.
Manatee watching is incredible in the Florida Springs and very accessible by kayak or SUP.

In the springs you can see manatees, go kayaking, or go SUP boarding. There are all kinds of attractions at each of the springs, as they’re each set up differently. I recommend doing your research to figure out which ones allow you to take your own personal watercraft. And also which ones allow you to paddle next to manatees.

Our friend Ken Whiting has a great article on How to Get Your Kids Into Paddling. Check it out!

Eat, Eat, and Eat

Eating is DEFINITELY one of the best things you can do in Florida with kids!
Eating is DEFINITELY one of the best things you can do in Florida with kids!

The third of my favorite things to do in Florida with kids is eat. Now, I know that sounds silly, but the promise of food at the end of the day really adds to the adventure. When my family is out hiking or paddling, I’ll entice the kids to push harder or walk further by saying “Don’t forget, we’re going to this really awesome restaurant later, so if you want to be able to get ice cream, let’s push through this hike.” It tends to work quite well.

Florida in general has some really good food, even if you're not a seafood person. There are tons of varieties, including Mexican, and mom and pop style places, I was pleasantly surprised. You can even get gator bites and unique dishes to add to the element of adventure.

One of the things we do with our kids in Florida are half days at tourist spots.
One of the things we do with our kids in Florida are half days at tourist spots.

Be a Tourist

The last recommendation of things to do in Florida with kids is to just be a tourist. I’ve talked about the beach, and the springs, and although I love being outdoors, it’s okay to be a tourist. When you have small kids, they tend to remember the big balloons and all the colors. And although there are definitely some tourist traps, tourist attractions are really fun for the kids.

The trick for enjoying yourself with these tourist attractions is to just remember that it’s just for the day. You’ll be surprised how much fun you can have. For me, I’m not a big fan of paying to do putt-putt, for example, but when I act excited and the kids are excited, we end up having a great family day out.

When I talk about a tourist trap I mean like putt-putt golf, theme parks, and splash pads. These things aren’t the most things engaged with the outdoors, but you are still enjoying the outdoors with an added element of excitement for the kids.

What kid doesn't want to feed baby alligators!
What kid doesn't want to feed baby alligators!

One thing my kids did In Florida was feed baby alligators, which was really fun. It was just one minute of the trip, and it wasn’t a big part of our vacation, but the kids talk about it all the time. Don’t undervalue all these little things, because, in the end, it might just be what the kids talk about to all their friends.

Do Your Research

Florida can be overwhelming as there are so many things to do with kids, so be sure to do your research. If there’s something that you particularly enjoy or you’re looking forward to, do your research first. Figure out where is the best seafood, where is the best seashell hunting, and where are the best family-friendly beaches. It’ll really help you narrow down your list of where you want to go.
