Having tested many different canoes and kayaks over the last four years, I’ve realized that there aren’t that many truly bad kayaks out there. The biggest question is actually, which is the correct kayak for you? What value does it give? Does it give bang for your buck?

This year, I tested many different kayaks and canoes and, for the most part, liked all of them, but some stood out as particularly awesome! So the Paddle TV awards are here to recognize that awesomeness. 

Best Gateway Kayak – The Sea Eagle 330

This is not a new kayak, it has, in fact, been around for several years, but I tried it for the first time this year. The Sea Eagle 330 wins the award for being the best gateway kayak. 

A gateway kayak is a kayak that gets people into the sport. It allows them to try kayaking affordably and discover if it is something they would like to continue. A great gateway kayak needs to be affordable, but it also needs to provide a reasonable paddling performance. A gateway kayak has to be fun to paddle to encourage people to continue. At the same time, it is likely a kayak that people will upgrade from reasonably quickly. 

I tested two of the most popular, cheapest gateway kayaks side by side: the Sea Eagle 330 and Intex Explorer K2. I discovered that the Sea Eagle 330 is a much better kayak and provides better value. It is about $75 (USD) more expensive. However, it is overall much better quality in every way. For example, it comes with a three-year warranty instead of a 90-day warranty, and the pump and the paddle provided are of better quality. Overall, it just provides a better paddling experience. So, the Sea Eagle 330 is the gateway kayak I recommend to people. 

However, the reason that I am giving the Sea Eagle 330 a Paddle TV award is that for $240 (USD), it provides unbelievable value. 

The Most Luxurious Kayak – P&H Volan 160 

The P&H Sea Kayaks Volan 160 is on the other side of the spectrum. This gets a Paddle TV award for being the most luxurious kayak I have tested this year or maybe ever. 

The P&H Volan is a high-performance touring kayak that is designed to be able to handle any water conditions, from flat water covering distances to rough water and ocean surf. 

It is a 16-foot-long sea kayak that is 23 inches wide and is a composite sea kayak. It is made from a mix of carbon and kevlar and costs between $4500 – $6000 (USD). That is quite a chunk of change. 

The P&H Volan is a beautiful lifetime kayak. If you take care of it properly, it will last you a lifetime. For people with enough money to spend, the P&H Volan is definitely worth the money. It really is a beautiful thing and well deserving of a Paddle TV award. 

The Best Recreational Kayak – Perception Hangtime 11

Flipping back to the other side of the spectrum again, the Perception Hangtime 11 gets a Paddle TV award for being the best recreational kayak I tested. 

The reason that I’m giving the Hangtime 11 a Paddle TV award is because of its innovation. It is not a kayak that is designed for everyone, but it is designed for people who want to hang out on the water and relax with friends and family. Unlike every other kayak I’ve ever seen, the Perception Hangtime 11 has an integrated lounge chair on the back. 

You can use the lounge chair while on the water, but it is also perfect to chill out when the kayak is on the shore. It has a comfortable headrest, and cup holders are placed all over the kayak. This 100% fits the bill for a recreational kayak; it is a boat that people can unwind on. For $950 (USD), it is not a bad deal. 

The Most Sustainable – Melker Rodloga

The Melker Rodloga is one of the most beautiful kayaks I’ve ever seen. It is a head-turner. That is one of the reasons that it wins a Paddle TV award. But the other reason is that it is a beautiful boat to paddle. 

Melker's mission, with all their kayaks, is to change the paddling industry and manufacture kayaks in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Instead of using carbon and kevlar as most composite kayaks do, they use a locally sourced flax weave. They are also doing all sorts of cool things with prototyping, including using recycled boats and old fishing nets to create prototypes for these kayaks. 

So the Melker Rodloga is definitely worthy of a Paddle TV award for its sheer beauty, performance, and the steps they are taking to create a more environmentally friendly industry. 

The Best White Water Kayak – The Pyranha Scorch X

Paddling the Pyranha Scorch X gave me one of the most unique white water paddling experiences I have had in a long time. It is fair to say that it is the dryest riding creek boat I have ever paddled. It has incredible comfort, speed, and boof-ability. The secondary stability rivals that of any other kayak. It really is a fun and confidence-inspiring kayak. 

What separates the Pyranha Scorch X from other creek boats of its class is that it is a bit longer. It is 10 feet and has incredible rocker, which gives it a lot more speed and a high ability to boof and stay on top of the water. 

The Best Cruiser Kayak – Delta Kayaks 15.5 GT

The 15.5 GT touring kayak wins an award because of its performance as a cruiser kayak. It has a great combination of performance and stability. While it is not the fastest kayak nor the most stable, it is a great middle-of-the-road touring kayak. The kayak is really well-built and of good quality. 

The Delta Kayaks 15.5 GT is 15.5 feet long and 24 inches wide. It costs around $2300 (USD). This kayak costs more than a rotamolded kayak but less than most composite kayaks. That is because it is a thermoform kayak. This means it is a plastic kayak but is much stiffer and lighter than a traditional rotamolded plastic kayak. It weighs only 49 LBS, so it is easy to move around. 

The 15.5 GT is well-made, performs well, and is confidence-inspiring, so it deserves a Paddle TV award. 

The Sea Eagle Inflatable Travel Canoe

When I first heard about this canoe, I was not expecting it to feel or be like a canoe whatsoever. But I was wrong. The Sea Eagle Travel Canoe looks and acts like a canoe. It has some benefits over some traditional canoes. The Travel Canoe is 16 feet long and 38 inches wide and retails for around $1800 (USD). This is similar to canoes in its class. 

What makes it such a special canoe – except for the fact that it is a full-sized inflatable canoe that fits in the back of your car and in your apartment – is the fact that it is the most stable canoe that I have ever been in. It provides rock-solid stability, and you can take this on any canoe trip that you can take another canoe on.

The fact that the Sea Eagle Travel Canoe is inflatable means that if you capsize, it will float whether it is swamped or not. I was truly impressed by this canoe. The Sea Eagle Inflatable Travel Canoe deserves a Paddle TV award. 

The Swift Cruiser 14.8 Pack Boat

I actually reviewed the Swift Cruiser 14.8 pack boat a few years ago in the very first boat review I ever did, and I really liked it then. I took it out for another trip recently and again realized why I really liked it. 

This is a canoe-kayak hybrid boat. It has the benefits of the canoe, including the fact that it is a big open boat with plenty of space for storage, but it also has a kayak seat and footpegs in it. Therefore, you can paddle it like a kayak. This means that on a solo trip, you get the benefits of a kayak and a canoe. 

In the right circumstances, it is hard to find a better boat for solo trips. However, it is not designed to be used on all trips, so if you are on exposed water with rough conditions, it is probably not the best boat. But for classic multi-day canoe trips, going lake to lake, or river trips with portages, the Cruiser 14.8 is truly a dream. 

It is not a cheap boat, costing roughly $3500-4500 (USD). But it also weighs between 24-30 LBS, which is remarkable, especially when lugging it across a long portage. I loved paddling the Cruiser 14.8, and it is definitely worthy of a Paddle TV award.

The YakAttack Tow N’ Stow Cart

YakAttack sells two types of Tow N’ Stow carts: the bar cart and the bunkster. These carts are designed for different types of kayaks. 

Kayak carts are a Godsend for many people. They can be the difference between getting on the water and not getting on the water. This is particularly true if you use recreational kayaks or fishing kayaks, which are too heavy to move alone. Kayak carts solve the issue of carrying heavy kayaks to and from the water. 

What makes the YakAttack Tow N’ Stow so great is that they completely break down. YakAttack has engineered a system that lets you take the cart apart with no tools at all. The pieces pop together and make a solid cart that can hold up to 450 LBS. You can use these carts to carry any kayak necessary, including a kayak that is fully packed with fishing or camping gear. The Tow N’ Stow is made of plastic, aluminum, and stainless steel, so it can handle salt water. 

These carts retail for $190 (USD) and $250 (USD), which sounds expensive. However, this is what you would expect to pay for a quality kayak cart. The Tow N' Stow cart is an impressively innovative piece of gear. It is absolutely worthy of a Paddle TV award!  

Nite Ize Runoff Packing Cubes

Nite Ize offers waterproof, runoff packing cubes. These cubes are a new take on dry bags. The cubes come in three sizes: small, medium, and large, and have a clear front that lets you see inside the bag. 

What separates the Nite Ize packing cubes from other dry bags is the two-zip technology. This is the zipper system that you use to seal the cubes up. It is an easy-to-use zipper that does an excellent job of sealing the bag shut. 

I tested the seal on the packing cubes several times on short canoe trips. But I also tried standing on the closed cube on dry land to see if the zipper would hold. The seal and zipper held up to 200 LBS of me standing on the sealed cube. That is impressive! 

I am looking forward to seeing these packing cubes in bigger sizes. The current sizes are convenient for packing food, first aid kits, and knick-knacks needed for camping. They are also great for storing and containing the smell of shoes when traveling! Nite Ize Runoff packing cubes are very deserving of a Paddle TV award. 

Astral Loyak Shoes

Astral is well-known for making great water shoes, and the Loyak is a popular water shoe. But it is the Astral Loyak AC water shoes that are particularly noticeable. They are much lighter, which keeps your feet cooler in hot conditions. 

I started using Loyak AC shoes this year and love them. The Loyak AC has been my go-to pair of water shoes all year, even in colder conditions in Finland. They are not ideal for cold conditions because they do not provide any insulation. However, I don’t get cold feet quickly, so it wasn’t an issue. 

What I love about the Loyak AC is how grippy the soles are. The shoes and soles are very flexible, so they fit in any type of boat. I use these shoes in white water kayaks, sea kayaks, on stand-up paddle boards, and when canoeing. You really can use them for anything. 

The shoe is porous so that water can flow in and out in seconds. But the fabric stops rocks and coarse sand from getting into the shoe. All in all, the Astral Loyak shoe is a great water shoe. It retails for about $100 (USD) and is definitely worth a Paddle TV award. 

Gearlab Outdoors Deckpod 2

The Deckpod 2 is designed to go on the front deck of a touring kayak. Since getting the Deckpod, I have used it almost every time I’ve paddled a touring kayak. It is so convenient to have a bag on the front deck and within reach. It is even more convenient than the day hatches that some touring kayaks have. 

What I love about the Deckpod 2 is the attachment system. They have made it easy to attach the deckpod to the perimeter lines. The bag has side compartments for bilge pumps, paddle floats, or water bottles, and a main compartment inside. It has a hole to put a water bladder in and another hole for the hose. It even has secondary pockets inside the main compartment. 

The Deckpod 2 is convenient for storing things like sunscreen, snacks, water, camera gear, or anything else I want easy access to during the day. It comes in three colors: orange, black and white. 

I love the simplicity of the Deckpod: how easy it is to take on and off and how it provides easy access to my gear without impeding my paddling stroke. The Deckpod 1 was great, but the Deckpod 2 is a step up again. So, it is well worthy of a Paddle TV award. 

Zenbivy Sleeping System

The Zenbivy sleeping system starts with a sheet that goes over the top of your sleeping mattress. This allows you to sleep on a soft sheet instead of a slippery and crinkly sleeping mattress. The mummy is built into the sleeping sheet itself, which means that if it is cold, you can choose how to zip the sleeping bag on top. I often have it zipped up right by my arm on one side, but the rest is completely unzipped. This makes it feel just like a quilt at home and lets you adapt to any temperature. 

The bottom line is that you can sleep however you want in the Zenbivy Sleeping System. You are not encased in a sleeping bag. It is a great system, but it did take about 30 seconds when I was initially putting it together to figure it out. But once you have figured it out, it is awesome, and definitely worthy of a Paddle TV award. 

NRS Axiom Goretex Pro Dry Suit

The NRS Axiom Goretex Pro dry suit is the Mac daddy of dry suits. NRS has been making dry suits for a long time. Because of this, they have figured out many of the subtleties around making a dry suit. They make great dry suits, but the NRS Axiom Goretex Pro is by far the best.

The Axiom dry suit uses Goretex Pro, so it is the ultimate suit for durability, breathability, and waterproofness. You do pay a premium for Goretex, but if you have the money, it is worth it. When spending a lot of money on a dry suit, the question is, do you spend a little more to get premium quality?

The kind of premium extras you get with the Axiom dry suit include:

• Neoprene over cuffs to protect the wrist and neck gaskets from UV,
• A relief zipper, depending on whether you get the girls or guys model, 
• Drainage in all the right places, 
• Integrated feet. 

If you take good care of the Axiom dry suit, it is a lifetime piece of gear. If you want to kayak regularly in colder conditions, it is worth investing in a quality dry suit. Sometimes, it isn’t just a luxury but an essential piece of safety gear. Even though they cost a fair penny, they will last a lifetime if you take good care of them.

Dry Robe Changing Mat

This is a mat with a very soft, cozy fabric on one side and a waterproof canvas on the other side. It is perfect for changing. I throw it on the ground and can change next to my car comfortably. I never knew I would love it so much, but the Dry Robe changing mat has a permanent spot in my vehicle. 

Airbank Puffer Pro Pump 

This pump is battery-driven and is awesome! It pumps up to 20 psi, so it can pump up drop stitch kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, or anything else you need pumping up. So far, without charging the pump, I have pumped up three kayaks. This is a good indication of the number of kayaks the Airbank Puffer Pro can pump before it needs charging. 

I am a big promoter of using electric pumps to pump up inflatable kayaks. If you use your inflatable kayak regularly, having an electric pump is very useful, especially if you have a drop-stitch kayak. You can also use this to pump the air out of the boat, making it easy to pack up. The Airbank Puffer Pro pump is another piece of gear with a permanent spot in my truck!

Astral PFD and Webber Sandals 

In the past, I have railed on using flip flops as paddling shoes. But a specially designed sandal is a different story. Astral Designs has been making creative and high-quality water shoes for quite a while, and that experience shows with their new line of paddling-specific sandals. Both the PFD Sandal and the Webber have super-sticking soles that work great whether it's wet or dry, and they both are stylish enough to wear around town. 

The Webber has an open, breathable, accommodating design, with thick straps that resemble those of an Astral life jacket. Just make sure to get the right size, as the heel isn't adjustable. Thankfully, they fit me true-to-size. I'm a 10 in most footwear, and the Webber 10 fit me perfectly. The PFD Sandal is slightly more supportive and technical. It has a cool inner compression layer that mimics the feel of a water shoe and makes it particularly well-suited for river guides, or anyone on more nuanced paddling trips.

NRS Guide Long Sleeve Shirt

If you've been following along with PaddleTV, then you've seen me getting a ton of miles out of my NRS Guide Long Sleeve Shirt. I love the way it looks, I love the way it feels, and I love how it works in so many settings. When I'm booting around town, the button-up design is appropriate almost anywhere. On kayaking adventures it has all the necessary features to keep me comfortable and protected. It is one of the top kayaking gear items I use the most. This shirt is quick-drying, is made of a stretchy nylon/polyester blend that moves with the body, and it offers UPF 50 protection. 

RapidPure Purifier & Water Bottle

I raved about this gadget earlier in the year, but since then I've gotten even more use out of it, and have grown to appreciate it that much more. The irony for us padders is that we often face dehydration (due to exertion and exposure) while completely surrounded by fresh water. The RapidPure Purifier takes care of that problem, and it's way easier to pack than liters of bottled water. 

How does the RapidPure purifier work?

This thing is a dream for paddlers, hikers, and travelers alike. Simply scoop up some fresh water (no saltwater) from a river, lake, or tap, screw the cap/purifier onto the bottle, and then suck the drinkable water out. Since this is a purifier, it will take care of protozoa, parasites, sediment, bacteria, and viruses. It's important to note that standard filters may separate the first four things, but they do not protect against viruses. So that's a nice bonus – especially when you're unsure of the source. 

According to RapidPure, the replaceable canister can generate 75 gallons (341 liters) of drinking water. The insulated, stainless steel version retails for $100 (USD), but you can cut that in half by opting for the plastic bottle instead. You'll also be able to attach the lid/purifier system to other 2.5-inch lid bottles (such as a Nalgene).

Level Six Algonquin Waterproof Canoe Tripping Pack

If you've done any multi-day canoeing, especially trips that involve occasional slogs over land, then you'll know that a good canoe pack/portage bag is worth its weight in gold. These extra-large carry cases allow you to throw a ton of gear on your back, which frees up your hands for the canoe, and makes it possible to do each portage in a single trip.

The Algonquin Waterproof Canoe Tripping Pack from Level Six is one of the best canoe gear items. It has a capacity of 96L, and the combination of padded shoulder straps/hip belt and vented back support makes it easier to bear such a gargantuan load. The Algonquin's durable nylon exterior protects against abrasion from the rocks and trees, and it includes two removable dry bags, for keeping all your essentials from getting wet en route. 

Suspenz Kayak Carts

Another subject I touched on recently was how to manage and mitigate pain associated with kayaking. Kayak carts aren't new products, but they are a new concept for most paddlers. So I wanted to highlight two options from Suspenz, to further encourage people to try out these back and shoulder-sparing devices. 

Most hard-shell kayaks are between 10 – 17 feet in length. They typically weigh between 40 – 70 pounds (though sit-on-top fishing kayaks can be upwards of 150 pounds!).

Carrying a kayak can be a strenuous and painful task. Kayak carts are a great way to eliminate this chore, and are certainly worth the $150 – $210 (USD) investment. But since there's no one-size-fits-all model, you'll have to make an informed purchase based on the kayak(s) you own.

Two options I recommend are the Suspenz Deluxe Airless Kayak Cart, and the Suspenz All-Terrain SD Airless Kayak and Canoe Cart. Both are deemed “airless” because the wheels are hard — no flat tires to worry about here. They are also super simple to set up/secure, and they both have padding to keep your kayak protected from the metal frame.

The All-Terrain is a heavier duty option, with not only higher clearance, but a higher weight capacity (300 pounds) and the ability to adjust to a variety of shapes and sizes. The Deluxe has a carrying-capacity of 150 pounds, which is still plenty for most standard kayaks.

The Swell Watercraft Scupper 14 is the Best Sit-on-Top Kayak for 2022

Sit-on-top kayaks are designed to offer freedom of movement and enhanced stability, but typically at the cost of paddling performance. The Swell Watercraft Scupper 14 is unique in that it provides comparable speed to a sit-inside model of equivalent class (yes, at the expense of some stability), but without sacrificing the comfort of an open cockpit. The way they accomplished this was by making the seat low in the kayak – below the waterline, actually. So it feels like you're sitting in the kayak (rather than on) but it's still easy to get in and out of, and it doesn't feel cramped. Another cool thing is that in order to manage incoming water, Swell Watercraft came up with an innovative 1-way scupper plug system that works beautifully.

The Best Touring Kayak 2022

The P&H Sea Kayaks Leo HV is the Best Touring kayak of 2022

Price: $2,599 USD

At $2,599 (USD), the P&H Leo HV (High Volume) is not a cheap boat. But that’s what you should expect to pay for a high-performance, well-made kayak that could very well be a lifetime purchase. The Leo's versatility means you can take it in all sorts of conditions. For example, this is labeled as a sea kayak, and yet, I had a blast on my 2-day river trip (which included Class 1 & 2 rapids). Advanced paddlers will love how fast, responsive, and maneuverable this kayak is. But with that said, even though the Leo is fairly narrow, it's still stable enough for adventurous beginners.

What is a Gateway Kayak?

A gateway kayak is an entry level kayak, low-cost, high-value, fun to paddle, easy to transport/store. I recently gave a PaddleTV award to the TuckTec Folding Kayak for being the best “gateway” kayak. But another great first choice is the Sea Eagle 330 Inflatable kayak. Both of these rigs give you everything you need to get started (minus a life jacket). And even though they are remarkably inexpensive, they both deliver quality first paddling experiences that will leave beginners excited to keep going, and keep progressing.

That's why I call these “gateway” kayaks, and that's why I am putting extra emphasis on this category this year. The problem with cheap kayaks is that although they initially get people out on the water, they may ultimately turn new paddlers off of the sport if the experience is lousy. The TuckTec and SE-330 both give kayaking a good connotation, but still without breaking the bank.

The Best Whitewater Kayak 2022

The Jackson Kayak Rockstar V is the Best Whitewater Kayak for 2022

Price: $1,599 USD

Capacity: 240 LBS (108 KG)

The Jackson Kayak Rockstar V not only excelled on the rapids, but testing it out was the most fun I've had in ages. It surfs like a dream, spins like a top, it's incredibly easy to initiate ends on both flatwater and whitewater, and it even runs rivers reasonably well (though not its primary function). All of this makes it a super playful craft, and a vessel for pure joy! Somewhat surprisingly, I could tell that the Rockstar V would work well for relative newbies all the way up to top-tier experts. Anyone who wants a whitewater, play-boating machine should definitely check this one out!

The Best Recreational Kayak 2022

The LiquidLogic Saluda 12 is the Best Recreational Kayak for 2022

Price: $1,099 USD

Length: 12′

Weight: 51 LBS (23 KG)

Capacity: 300 LBS (136 KG)

The reason the LiquidLogic Saluda 12 (also available in an 11-foot and 14.5-foot tandem version) gets my vote for the best all-around, recreational kayak, is because it combines both stability and paddling performance in a rare package. Anyone can jump in this boat and feel confident, and yet, the Saluda doesn't give up a ton of speed to achieve that solid foundation.

The Saluda 12 kayak beautifully cuts through the water, and it can hold an edge nicely (i.e. secondary stability) when navigating places with some current, and for general maneuverability. The Saluda is also very comfortable, owing to a framed-seat, padded leg supports, and solid foot-braces. With all that said, “all-around” can only go so far. For all its attributes, it's important to note that this kayak is meant for flat, protected waters, and in my opinion, is best-suited for paddlers of about 230 pounds or less.

Now that summer has come to a close, it's time to reflect back on a season of bomber paddling trips. This time of year I like to give props to the best of the best kayaks that I personally got to test. And though there are many other models that get accolades online, or catch my eye in stores, I think it's only fair to speak to what I have personally tried out.

Best All-Around Portable Kayak 2022

Why is the Sea Eagle 385ft Fast Track the best portable kayak for 2022? 

The Sea Eagle 385ft Fast Track gets my vote for the best all-around inflatable kayak. Its versatile design makes it well-equipped for flatwater paddling, but it can also confidently handle rougher waters, such as Class 1 and 2 whitewater, and open water settings with decent-sized waves and wind chop.

Tandem or solo

It can be paddled just as effectively solo or tandem, and with its weight capacity, all sizes of paddlers can have fun in this thing – particularly if they slightly favor stability over speed. But even with that caveat, one of the stand-out attributes of the 385ft is how efficiently it cuts through the water, especially for inflatable kayaks.

Drop stitch design

It achieves this performance benefit through a combination of a drop-stitch, inflatable keel that forms a V-bow, a hard shell nose piece, and a removable skeg that further helps it track.

The final thing that adds to its overall applicability is the value. There are different packages to choose from, depending on your budget, and the base offering comes with everything you need to get paddling: a paddle, seat, carry bag, repair kit, and a pump (just no lifejacket).

What is a gateway kayak?

I consider the TuckTec a “gateway” kayak because it can be easily stored and transported, is easy to assemble, paddles reasonably well, has great durability, and comes with a 3-year warranty — all of this will likely inspire new paddlers to keep progressing.

Affordable and fun

In my experience, the TuckTec Folding Kayak offers the best overall value for beginners. The reason I say this is because it not only sells for an incredibly affordable price (often found online for $375 USD), but it also delivers a great paddling experience.

The danger of some inexpensive kayaks is that they aren't fun to paddle. And if someone's early experiences on the water aren't enjoyable, that might stop them from sticking with the sport.

Thankfully, the TuckTec ensures a quality first foray, without breaking the bank. A couple caveats worth mentioning: 1) Though the capacity is listed as 300 pounds, I think it's best used by paddlers weighing 220 pounds or less, and 2) I'd keep sessions short and sweet with the TuckTec (around 1 – 3 hours).

Best Performing Portable Kayak 2022

Pakayak Bluefin 142 is Best Performing Portable Kayak for 2022

Why is the Pakayak the Best Performing Portable Kayak?

Because inflatable kayaks prioritize portability, and because they are typically a softer, less-streamlined design, performance usually lags in comparison to hard-shell kayaks. The Pakayak Bluefin 142 is a welcomed exception to this rule because it is a hard-shell kayak that comes in packable parts.

Performance and Portability

It will therefore appeal to the inflatable kayak market, while also having touring-level paddling capabilities (and the necessary storage to do so, which inflatables also tend to lack). Though this is an impressive balance between both worlds, the Bluefin 142 is on the pricier side ($1,995), and it sacrifices some comfort and speed (relative to a classic hard-shell), in order to achieve portability.

Nonetheless, this is a performance-driven and packable paddling machine, especially for people who are cool with giving up a smidge of stability in favor of improved efficiency.

Most Versatile Paddle Craft 2022

SUP/Kayak Hybrids are Versatile

In terms of paddling performance, I was pleasantly surprised by the Isle Switch. Because it has that wide, stable platform, and a flat hull, I wasn't expecting much in terms of speed. Now, the Switch still isn't for winning races, but it had a bit of zip to it, and with the help of that large, removable fin, it tracked quite well. But the thing that really put a smile on my face (and my family's) was how ridiculously versatile this thing was.

Versatility as a SUP, kayak, solo and tandem

It can be used as a stand-up paddleboard, a solo kayak, a tandem kayak, heck, we even had my wife, my daughter, and myself all on there at once! You can change the configurations of the seats on the fly so that you can be facing forward one moment, enjoying the view, and then turned towards each other, having a conversation, the next.

You can switch things up however you like, and that is the magic of the Isle Switch. Oh and did I mention how light this thing is? At only 19 pounds, this rig is a dream to move around.

Those are the top dogs for me this year. But before I go, I have to give two honorable mentions to a couple crafts that are still well-worth looking into. 

Honorable Mention #1: AquaGlide Chelan 120 Kayak

The Chelan 120 is light, easy to get around, and fun to paddle. If you're looking for a solo kayak that is exceptionally portable, this may be your boat. 

Honorable Mention #2: Decathlon Itiwit Kayak

The Itiwit is another great beginner's kayak. It regularly sells for under $300 (USD) and it's good for one, two, or even three people. This makes the Itiwit an affordable boat for the family, or for having a fun afternoon with some friends.

That being said, I would never insinuate that you need to have a high-performance paddle. I've always said that any kayak or paddle is better than no kayak or paddle. You should get what you can afford. This article will help you pick a new paddle if you spend a lot of time paddling and have the money to spend money on a new paddle. Upgrading your paddle is one of the best things that you can do to elevate the whole paddling experience. 

These Best-In-Class Awards are being given to the best high-performance paddles of 2021. I chose these from the paddles that I had the opportunity to test in 2021. There are likely other paddles on the market that deserve to be part of this conversation. That being said, there is no denying that these award-winners deserve special recognition.

Lendal Storm paddle review

The bent shaft Lendal Storm is a full carbon paddle that retails for $625 USD. The paddle weighs a mere 22 oz or 650 g. The blades have a surface are of 609 square centimeters. They have a foam core that gives them a light and lively feel. The Lendal Storm carbon paddle is available in lengths of 205 to 220 centimeters. It is primarily designed for touring or sea kayaking in any conditions. 

Why does the Storm get my nod as one of the best high-performance paddles of 2021? 

Despite its light weight, the Lendal Storm is a paddle that feels like it can handle almost any condition. The fact that the Storm is only available from 205 to 220 centimeters reinforces the fact that it isn’t designed for big and wide recreational kayaks.

What makes the Storm unique is the ferrule system (where the two-piece paddle connects in the center). The Storm’s lever lock provides a very secure connection, which allows you to choose any feather/twist that you want, and to add five centimeters of length to the paddle if so desired. Although five centimeters isn’t enough to make this a one-size-fits-all paddle, it is a nice little feature. 

Werner Ovation paddle review

The Werner Ovation is a full carbon paddle that’s available with a straight shaft or bent shaft. The bent shaft version retails for $590 USD and weighs a mind blowing 20.5 ounces, or 577 grams, making it one of the lightest paddles on the market, if not the absolute lightest. The blades have a surface area of 643 square centimeters and a foam core that makes them feel as though they want to pop out of the water with every stroke you take. The Ovation comes in lengths of 210 to 240 and is primarily designed for leisure paddling in calm water. 

Why does the Werner Ovation get my nod as one of the best high-performance paddles of 2021? 

Not only is the Ovation one of the lightest paddles on the market, but it has a uniquely beautiful feel in the hands, as the blades seemingly leap out of the water following each stroke.

Who is the Werner Ovation paddle for?

The Ovation is not for everyone. The price put it out of range for many people, and the paddle is not designed to handle rough or challenging paddling conditions. This is a paddle for people who like to cruise around in calm water. It’s a paddle for people who are willing to trade power and durability for a uniquely magical paddling experience.

Aqua Bound Whiskey Fiberglass paddle review

The Aqua Bound Whiskey Fiberglass paddle retails for $315 USD. The paddle has a carbon fiber shaft and fiberglass blades that have a surface area of 613 square centimeters. Available in length of 200 to 240 centimeters, the paddle weighs in at 26 ounces or 737 grams.

A kayak paddle that delivers remarkable value

Designed to handle a wide range of paddling conditions, the Aqua Bound Whiskey is the only paddle without carbon blades to crack this ‘Best-In-Class’ list. While the Whiskey isn’t the lightest paddle, or the top performing paddle, on this list, it is the least expensive paddle and it delivers remarkable value. Furthermore, the Whiskey’s ‘Posi-Lok’ ferrule system is second to none. It offers infinite feathering, and once locked in place, there’s no discernible play.

So who is the Whiskey Fiberglass paddle for?

It’s for any paddler who wants a significant paddle upgrade without absorbing the cost of a full carbon paddle. The Whiskey is for beginner to expert recreational and touring paddlers who want a paddle that they can take into all but the roughest of conditions.

Gearlab Outdoors Kalleq paddle review

The Gearlab Outdoors Kalleq is a full carbon Greenland paddle that retails for $438 USD. The Kalleq comes in lengths of 200, 220, and 230 centimeters and weighs 25.5 ounces or 720 grams. It's primarily designed for expeditions, recreational touring, and rolling.

If you’ve never seen a Greenland paddle before, here’s what you need to know. Greenland paddles don’t only look different from other paddles, but they require a different paddling technique which takes practice to learn. The benefit of using a Greenland paddle is that it reduces shoulder and body strain, especially during long days of paddling.

Why did I choose the Kalleq as one of the top high-performance paddles of 2021?  The Kalleq delivers a smooth and lively stroke and feels great in the hands. The Wilderness Systems Apex Carbon paddle is a full carbon paddle that retails for $440 USD and weighs 27 ounces (765 g). The foam core blades have a surface area of 610 square centimeters and the paddle comes in two telescoping lengths of 205 to 225 centimeters and 220 to 240 centimeters. The Apex is primarily designed for recreational paddling and touring in varied conditions.

There are a few reasons the Apex is an award winner.

For one, at $440 USD for a full carbon paddle, the Apex delivers great value. Futhermore, the 20cm telescoping capability of the paddle makes it the only true, one-size-fits-all carbon paddle on the market. For example, I will often use a 220 cm paddle for narrow touring or sea kayaks, and a 240cm paddle for wider sit-on-top recreational kayaks or fishing kayaks. One Apex paddle accommodates either of these situations.
