Rigging it takes about 20 minutes, especially after the first go. And once you’ve got the frame dialled in, it’s surprisingly quick to roll out, inflate, and launch.

What I Love About Sit-On-Top Kayaks

Firstly, sit-on-top kayaks are open and comfortable. You can sit cross-legged, stand up in a lot of them, move around without any problem, and even sit sideways with your legs over the side if you want. They're also incredibly stable, making them ideal for activities like fishing, photography, and videography where you need a stable and open platform. These kayaks prioritize stability over performance, which is great for doing more than just paddling.

What I Hate About Sit-On-Top Kayaks

On the flip side, sit-on-top kayaks are generally heavy. They have a lot more plastic in them compared to sit-inside kayaks of the same length, making them 15-25% heavier. They're also harder to carry and move around because they lack a cockpit rim, which means you can't just throw them over your shoulder. You have to carry them suitcase-style from the side grab handle, which is cumbersome, or you need two people, one on each end. This added weight and awkward carrying make them less appealing for solo adventures.

Another downside is that sit-on-top kayaks often sacrifice performance for stability. As someone who loves a fast and responsive kayak, this can be a bit of a letdown.

Hurricane Osprey 120 Kayak: Breaking the Mold?

Now, Hurricane thinks they've found a way to change my mind with the Osprey 120 kayak. Let’s dive into the specifics before hitting the water. The Osprey 120 retails for $1,500. It's 12 feet 2 inches long, 31.5 inches wide, and weighs 47 pounds with the seat (43 pounds without). It has a capacity of 325 pounds. The design aims to optimize both performance and stability, featuring a relaxed hull design, a K9 bow pad, gear tracks for mountain accessories, adjustable foot braces, four molded grab handles, a gasketed H-pod for storing small items, and a rear tank well with bungees.

Testing the Hurricane Osprey 120 Kayak

It’s time to get this kayak on the water. Despite a gray sky, it's a perfect day to test the Hurricane Osprey 120. Here’s what I found:

Portability

At 47 pounds with the seat, the Hurricane Osprey 120 kayak is a remarkably portable sit-on-top kayak. This weight is a significant advantage, especially for someone tired of lugging around heavier boats. However, carrying it solo remains tricky without the ability to throw it on your shoulder. Carrying it suitcase-style is manageable up to about 100 yards. Still, a kayak cart would be a welcomed addition to your paddling kit.

Performance and Stability

Hurricane claims the Osprey 120 strikes a great balance between performance and stability, and I’d say they’re right. The kayak is 31.5 inches wide, which isn’t super wide but provides plenty of stability. The thermoformed construction makes it rigid, smooth, and offers excellent glide through the water. It tracks well, even when you stop paddling. While it’s not a speed machine, it performs better than expected for a 12-foot sit-on-top kayak.

Comfort

The elevated frame seat is incredibly comfortable, offering good lower back support for paddling and the ability to kick back in full Lazy-Boy mode. For paddlers up to 6'2″, this kayak offers ample space. Taller paddlers might find the cockpit area a bit cramped.

Durability

Thermoformed kayaks like the Osprey 120 are designed for use, not abuse. It can handle scratches and minor bumps, but if you’re planning to paddle in rocky areas or drag your boat around, a rotomolded kayak would be a better choice.

Features

The Hurricane Osprey 120 kayak has practical features without overloading on accessories. The K9 bow pad is great for bringing along a dog, providing grip and comfort. The gear track in front of the cockpit is within easy reach and doesn’t interfere with paddling. The H-pod is perfect for storing small items, although it could be slightly bigger to accommodate larger phones.

Value

At $1,500, the Osprey 120 is about $200-250 more than comparable rotomolded sit-on-top kayaks. The extra cost is justified by the weight savings, improved performance, and overall better glide through the water. For many, the premium will be worth it.

Who is the Hurricane Osprey 120 Kayak for?

The Hurricane Osprey 120 kayak is perfect for anyone who wants a sit-on-top kayak and is willing to pay a little extra for a lighter, better-performing kayak. It’s versatile enough for flat water, some rough water, and mild currents, but not for rapids or heavy surf. It's ideal for paddlers who like to fish or do other activities on their kayak. The Osprey 120 is not for someone who wants a kayak that prioritizes durability. It isn't a kayak to drag around or run into rocks with repeatedly. Unlike the heavier, rotomolded sit-on-top kayaks, some care needs to be taken when paddling any thermoformed kayak.

Key Considerations

• Type of Paddling
  The first question to ask yourself is what type of paddling you plan to do. For flat water like ponds or small lakes, any kayak will suffice. However, if you plan to paddle in more challenging conditions like rivers with currents or open water with waves, you’ll need a kayak suited to those environments.
• Water Conditions
  For use on flat water, any kayak will do. If you're paddling in water that is rough, or can get rough if the wind picks up, you need a kayak that can handle rough water. Sit-on-top kayaks are excellent for mild rough water since they can’t swamp, and if flipped, are easy to re-enter. Sit-inside kayaks need to be able to accept a skirt and they need to have bulkheads to handle rougher waters and provide safety and stability. Bulkheads are walls inside the kayak that separate the boat into separate compartments, so that the entire kayak won't get swamped with water in the case of a capsize.
• Portability
  If storage and transport are issues, a portable kayak might be for you. These come in several forms, including inflatables and folding kayaks, which are great for travel but may sacrifice some performance and durability.
• Material and Weight
  The material of the kayak affects both weight and durability. Plastic kayaks, especially rotomolded ones, are incredibly durable but heavier. Thermoformed plastic kayaks are lighter and stiffer but less durable. Composite kayaks, like those made from fiberglass, kevlar, and carbon fiber, offer the best performance and the lightest weight options, but at a higher cost. They also need to be treated with more care than rotomolded plastic kayaks.

Kayak Preferences:

Stability vs. Speed

• Length: Longer kayaks are faster, while shorter ones are more maneuverable.
• Width: Wider kayaks are more stable but slower.
• Rocker: More rocker means better maneuverability, less rocker means better tracking.
• Hull Design: Impacts both stability and speed, with different designs better suited for different paddling styles.

Sit-on-Top vs. Sit-Inside Kayaks

• Sit-on-Top: More stable and accessible, but slower and you’ll likely get wet.
• Sit-Inside: Faster and better control, offers protection from the elements, but harder to re-enter if flipped.

Tandem vs. Single Kayaks

• Tandem Kayaks: Faster with two paddlers and great for shared experiences, but less maneuverable and you need to coordinate well with your partner.
• Single Kayaks: Offer more freedom and maneuverability, perfect for solo adventures.

Features of the NRS Pike Fishing Kayak

The features of the NRS Pike inflatable fishing kayak include:

How Easily Does the NRS Pike Inflate?

The NRS Pike is very easy to inflate. It has three non-drop stitch chambers along the sides which you need to pump to 3 psi. When fully pumped these do not feel flimsy at all.

The floor of the kayak is drop stitch and needs to be pumped up to 8 psi. This means that once fully inflated it is firm and rigid, allowing the whole kayak to perform more like a hard shell kayak. All in all, when fully inflated the kayak is hard, rigid, and not at all flimsy.

How Well Does the NRS Pump Work?

What I especially liked about assembling the NRS Pike is the pump that it came with. This was the NRS 2 HP Pump, one I’d never used before. This pump has two switches depending on which pump mode you want to use. The first mode lets you fill the kayak quickly, pumping lots of air into it at once.

When it gets harder and tighter to pump you can just flick a switch on the pump and switch it into the pressure boosting mode. This makes it easier to pump the kayak fully up to the high pressure it needs. This pump really takes the strain off of inflating an inflatable kayak.

I would always advocate using an electric pump, especially if you are regularly using an inflatable kayak. There are so many excellent options available nowadays, including battery-operated pumps so you don’t even need a vehicle. These really take the effort out of pumping up an inflatable kayak. But if you are looking for manual pumps then the NRS 2 HP Pump is an excellent option.

Who is the NRS Pike or Pike Pro for?

The NRS Pike is intended as an inflatable fishing kayak. However, the only features that differentiate this from a recreational kayak are the five YakAttack accessory mounts and the fish measuring board. The YakAttack mounts allow you to attach fishing gear to the kayak making it a fishing kayak machine. But, beyond that, this works well as a recreational kayak too!

If you are looking for a more kitted-out version of the NRS Pike, then you can purchase the NRS Pike Pro. This comes with paddles and five different Yakattack accessories to attach to the mounts on the kayak. These accessories are:

How Well Does the NRS Pike Perform?

I tested the NRS Pike out for an hour to see how it actually performed in action.

Portability

The NRS Pike weighs 48 lbs, which is not particularly heavy or light, but compared to a hard shell fishing kayak the same size, it is considerably lighter. You can definitely feel the weight whilst carrying the bag with everything in it, but it is still very portable. It is quick and easy to assemble. So overall, this boat gets high marks when talking about its portability.

Comfort

The whole idea of an elevated, framed seat in an inflatable kayak is amazing. I love it! The framed seat conforms to almost any butt shape and is nice and wide to fit a variety of differently-sized people. The back support on the seat is excellent, and the fact that the seat is elevated helps to keep you nice and dry.

The NRS Pike also has footpegs, something I love. The foot pegs in this boat are a good size and are high enough for you to rest the balls of your feet on them and get good support. This keeps your legs supported and allows you to push off of something while paddling. So not only do they make the kayak more comfortable, but they also enhance your paddling performance.

Stability

This kayak is rock solid. Standing up in it was a breeze. I don’t even know if you could flip the kayak if you tried. You are more likely to fall out of the kayak than flip it. It really is that stable!

Performance

Inflatable kayaks and performance don’t typically go together. Most inflatable kayaks are flat at the bottom meaning that they do not cut a path through the water. This means that the bow is not held in place and moves back and forth with every stroke you take. This lowers the performance of the kayak.

To counter this problem, the NRS Pike has a hard bow keel at the front of the boat. And this works well. It cuts through the water and holds a line much better than other inflatable kayaks. However, while this is a significant step up from other inflatable kayaks that do not have this, it still does not compare to hard shell kayaks.

The other thing about this kayak is that there is not a lot of rocker. It is quite flat. This was very noticeable when kayaking in the waves because they would very easily break over the bow. But the shape is what keeps the boat tracking in a straighter line compared to more banana-shaped inflatable kayaks.

All in all, for an inflatable kayak, this boat gives a solid performance.

The Features

This kayak does not have lots of features, but there are some worth talking about.

The daisy chain rigging on the kayak allows you to customize the tie-downs as well as add stuff to the boat. This is a simple but convenient feature to have on a kayak.

The YakAttack accessory mounts are a very nice feature. They have been placed in intelligent spots around the kayak so that they do not get in the way of paddling. This means you can use the mounts while paddling the boat.

The EVA pads stop you from slipping when you stand up but also provide protection for the kayak.

Is the NRS Pike Kayak Worth it?

Fishing kayaks range in price between about $800 to $5000 (USD). So this boat, which costs around $1400 (USD), while not cheap or entry-level, is not the extreme either. In fact, it is pretty much bang on what I would expect to pay for a portable, inflatable fishing kayak of this nature.

There are a number of features on the NRS Pike that add premium costs to the boat. For example, you will pay premium prices for a drop stitch floor. But it is the drop stitch floor that allows this kayak to travel through the water more like a hard shell kayak. You will also expect to pay more for a framed seat or for YakAttack mounts, but you are also getting value from these features.

The NRS Pike and Pike Pro are really well made inflatable fishing kayaks. NRS has been making boats for whitewater for years, and any boat that can handle being dragged over rocks and paddled down high-speed rapids, can handle fish hooks and fishing gear, provided you are a little careful. I would have total confidence fishing in this kayak. It is built tough and durable.

Overall, this inflatable fishing kayak has solid value for kayak anglers or recreational kayakers. This is perfect for anyone who wants an inflatable, calm-weather boat that will track well through the water. You pay a slight premium, but you will get premium features and a long-lasting, durable kayak.

There's something extra special about being right at water level as you reel in a long-awaited catch, and that experience is even more intimate when in a self-propelled craft. Fishing kayaks come in schools of different shapes, sizes, and styles. I'm here to help you tackle the unknowns when selecting a fishing kayak.  

What is the best fishing kayak?

One of the key decisions to make when purchasing a fishing kayak, is whether to go with a sit-on-top, or a sit-inside model. Sit-on-top kayaks have become the norm for serious anglers, and for good reason.

Sit-on-top kayaks offer a large platform that is great for moving around, handling fish, decking out with accessories, and for standing up. Standing gives you a better view of what lies beneath the surface, and allows you to cast more freely. This set-up brings into play some of the advantages of a powerboat experience. 

Another advantage of a sit-on-top kayak is that it comes with scupper holes. These ensure that any water that comes onto the boat drains back out again without issue. In some cases, these scupper holes can also be used to rig up a fish-finder. The next benefit comes in the form of the generous rear tank well.

This rear tank well on a kayak is perfect for stashing a tackle box and any other gear that you want quick-access to while on the water. Sit-on-top kayaks open the door to a pedal system, which is another exciting type of fishing kayak that we'll get into shortly. 

Sit-inside kayaks may not be as popular when it comes to fishing. These fishing kayaks still offer some advantages that are worth exploring. First of all, they are significantly better performers when it comes to the actual paddling.

If you have some distance to travel in a kayak before casting, a sit-inside kayak might be your best option. If you want something that can handle pure-paddling adventures from time to time, then this type of fishing kayak may appeal to you. Sit-inside kayaks use significantly less plastic. These fishing kayaks are much lighter than sit-on-top kayaks, and therefore easier to transport.

The downsides are that sit-inside fishing kayaks aren't as customizable. You usually can't stand up in a sit-inside kayak because they are less stable. The sit-inside kayaks are harder to get back in if you happen to flip over and take a swim.

Is it worth getting a pedal kayak?

If you've chosen to go down the road of sit-on-top kayaks, then consider a pedal kayak. Now, pedal kayaks have been around for ages. Their benefits for anglers is what led to their recent surge in appeal.

The most obvious advantage of a pedal kayak is that it frees up your hands. This is important for casting, even while moving around. Pedal kayaks also tend to travel faster than if paddling the same type of craft. When you snag that photo-worthy catch, you don't have to worry about fumbling with a paddle. You should still have a paddle on board in case your pedal drive gets a little wonky.

The most noticeable downside of pedal kayaks is how much they cost. A pedal fishing kayak will cost about $1,500 (USD) on average. This is more than a sit-inside kayak will cost of a similar class. But despite the added cost, most anglers who make the switch never go back to strict paddling.

Do inflatable kayaks make good fishing kayaks? 

Many paddlers may lack the necessary storage capacity or means of transportation to handle a big, heavy, sit-on-top fishing kayak. So the natural choice becomes a portable kayak, either folding or inflatable. You can absolutely still fish from these platforms, it will just be more of a minimalistic experience.

I recommend going with something that prioritizes stability over paddling performance for an inflatable fishing kayak. This will come in handy while wrestling with your prize. In terms of inflatable kayaks, I would also encourage you to invest in something that has a drop-stitch construction. Ensure the inflatable kayak is free from a fabric coating. Fishing hooks will be like kryptonite to cheaper inflatable kayaks. High-quality inflatable kayaks will be able to stand strong against potential punctures. 

Some Key Features of a Fishing Kayak

Once you've sorted through the basic categories of kayaks (i.e. sit-on-top vs sit-inside, hardshell vs portable, pedal vs paddle) it is time to hone in on more nuanced features. If you've been following along with PaddleTV then you know that I love a comfortable seat.

And since anglers tend to be out on the water much longer than recreational paddlers, a good seat really comes into play. For example, in my Perception Showdown 11.5, the high sitting position establishes a natural posture where my feet are below my butt. Having a high seat also makes it easier to shift in and out of a standing position. 

Being able to stand up in your kayak isn't required for a good fishing experience, but the enhanced view will improve your success rate, and being able to stretch out your legs will help combat those cumulative aches. So aside from a seat that can switch to a high-position, traction pads are a simple feature that make standing a much easier task. These also serve to dampen the noise while you're shifting about, so as not to spook the fish. 

Some anglers live and die by their electronics. This is where pedal kayaks shine brightest, since gear tracks can be utilized on the sides of the boat. If paddling, then these would simply be an impediment during every stroke. Now, there are always creative ways to accessorize, but for maximum deck space and accessibility, pedal kayaks can't be beat. 

Buying the right fishing kayak can be an intimidating journey, with lots of crossroads along the way. So I hope this article helped point you in the right direction. At the end of the day, sometimes trial and error has to be part of the equation. Fishing kayaks can be quite expensive, but if you get the right one, it may last you a lifetime. And if you find yourself craving an upgrade, there is a huge second-hand market out there that will take some of the pressure off.

If, on the other hand, you're someone who enjoys fishing but also paddling or pedaling around more casually, then these two traits might be tough pills to swallow. It depends on what's important to you. Let's dive into the nitty gritty details to get the enthusiasts even more pumped for this new release, and to give the fence-sitters more to mull over.

The Knarr features Jackson Kayak's totally new Flex Drive Mark IV pedal system, steering handles on both sides, and tall gunnels (or side walls) to protect your gear. There is also the ‘yard sale proof' rod management system, which is capable of securing 6 fishing rods inside those gunnels in order to keep them safe while launching, landing, and when not in use.

In addition, the Knarr has Jackson's TriTrack mounting system around the whole boat to provide unlimited customizing options when it comes to adding accessories. The EZ Hi-Lo seating system is made to be switched up and down while out on the water. The bow and stern are designed for the installation of trolling motors, electric motors, or a power pole. Finally, there are hatches in both the bow and stern for stowing your gear. 

The Knarr review as a pedal drive fishing kayak

Reviewing this kayak required me to put myself in a different headspace. I'm a paddler, through and through, and still getting the hang of the whole pedaling thing. I usually test kayaks for their paddling performance. The Knarr is a fishing machine, and so I needed to adjust some of my metrics a little bit. Thankfully, I got to head out on Lake Guntersville in Northern Alabama, which is one of the best bass fishing lakes in the entire country.

I also was lucky enough to team up with Jameson Redding, host of the Road Trip Angler, and Dan Perry, local angler extraordinaire. The setting and the stellar company certainly helped me switch into my best fishing cap. Click here if you want to watch the full Paddle Tales episode with those guys. But for now, here's what I can tell you from my 8-hour angling adventure in the Jackson Kayak Knarr. 

Is the Knarr a comfortable fishing kayak?

Wow, is it ever. There's so much room in the cockpit, it has padding throughout the floor, and Jackson always makes comfortable seats – this one particularly so. Whenever you're in paddle mode you can sit up straight and dig in, and then when you want to use the pedals, you can just drop it back into whatever reclined position works best for you. I also appreciated the EZ Hi-Lo mechanism.

Seat position of the Knarr kayak

The high position establishes a natural legs-lower-than-your-butt posture, which is always more comfortable. The low position would be great for locking in that stellar stability while facing rough waters. As the name suggests, both of these settings are easy to adjust on the fly. The whole seat is anchored to a sliding track. The seat can easily accommodate people of different heights and leg lengths. 

What features does the Knarr have?

This boat has a lot of features. For starters, the storage is solid. The hatches in the bow and stern are reasonably large. The Knarr isn't designed to be a multi-day kayak. More importantly, the rod holders are great. There is room for 6 fishing rods to be stashed in the kayak. The tips of each rode protected in the hull of the boat. Whenever a rod is just flapping out in the breeze, it can easily snag or snap on something. 

TriTrack System for mounting accessories

The TriTrack system wraps around the cockpit. An endless amount of accessories can be added in a variety of ways. I ended up just popping on another rod holder next to my seat for this outing, but I could see the creative potential if I was using the Knarr more regularly. 

Another nice feature of this kayak is the high side walls. They keep the water out and your gear in much better than boats with shallow cockpits. This comes into play more so in rough waters, but it's still a reassuring aesthetic on flatwater. 

Flex Drive Mark IV pedal system

Moving on to the new Flex Drive Mark IV system, this is a big improvement on its predecessors. This latest rig feels solid but smooth while pedaling. It also kicks up, automatically or as needed (if it hits something unexpectedly), into a protected chamber in the hull of the boat. Propeller systems can get bunged up with weeds.

Removing weeds

The nice thing about the Knarr is that every once in a while I can pull the propeller up manually and fish out the weeds through a small opening between my feet. I enjoyed the pedal drive system. The pedal drive can easily power a heavier boat like a fishing kayak. 

Hand controlled rudder steering

The final feature I'll expound on is the hand-controlled rudder. I loved that there was a handle on each side and that they worked in unison. This meant that I could steer with either hand, depending on my preference or whichever was free at that moment. I also thought that the Knarr maneuvered reasonably well. Like any boat this size, it wasn't ultra-responsive, but I never expected that it would be. 

Who is the Knarr for?

The Knarr is for dedicated kayak anglers. It's got all the bells and whistles that comes with this kind of package. This is a kick-ass kayak that will show up for you in all conditions.

How do you carry the Knarr kayak? 

The Jackson Kayak Knarr is 140 pounds. Let that sink in… That's not quite unheard of, but still exceptionally hefty for any kayak. This means that portability is an issue. You'll need two people or a kayak cart to lug this thing around, and a kayak trailer would be a huge asset for transportation. The Knarr would be a lot of boat to try and mount on a rooftop. If you have a trailer that you can launch at any boat launch, then all the better still. 

Is the Knarr a stable fishing kayak? 

The Knarr is 37-inches-wide. If it wasn't super stable then Jackson Kayak would have done something grievously wrong. Fortunately, they didn't and the result was as I expected. However, even though the Knarr is a stable kayak, it is not the most stable kayak I've ever encountered. The reason for this is intentional. Jackson Kayak built the Knarr to handle big water fishing. The hull was designed for some paddling performance and maneuverability. This inherently comes at the cost of stability.

This kayak has excellent initial stability and good secondary stability (i.e. how it feels while sitting flat vs. on edge). It doesn't lock in while on edge like some other wide kayaks do, but again, that's because of the intentional performance-favoring concessions. 

How does the Knarr perform as a fishing kayak?

It's important to understand that a kayak's performance is a relative thing. The Knarr is a stable fishing platform. It's not a slick, high-performance touring kayak. But for a kayak of this nature, the Jackson Kayak Knarr paddles quite efficiently, turns well, and the pedal drive system gets this thing moving pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, the water was too shallow to use the pedals for much of where we were on Lake Guntersville. This meant that I had to bust out my paddle for a good stint. Typically, in a boat like this (i.e. wide and heavy), that would be an agonizing experience. Granted, paddling the Knarr didn't feel like a dream, but it did go reasonably well. So overall, the Knarr won't turn heads with its speed and efficiency, but it does perform admirably considering all the other things it does. 

Is the Knarr worth it as a fishing kayak?

There's no way to tip-toe around the $4,199 (USD) price tag for this boat. It is an expensive kayak. At the same time, it's comparable or even slightly more competitive than other pedal fishing kayaks in this top-tier class. The value will be most appreciated by, as I said a moment ago, dedicated kayak anglers. If you're just getting into the sport of kayak fishing, or dabbling in some kayaking, then the Knarr might be overkill for you. But if your soul belongs in a kayak, with a line cast in the water, no matter the setting, then the Jackson Kayak Knarr will quickly become your best friend.

Not everyone needs a top-tier kayak to get the job done. Thankfully, there is a subsection of this market that specializes in fishing-specific kayaks for under $1,000. These are great for occasionally casting a line, or simply a straight-forward paddle whenever desired. If that sounds more like your style then you've come to the right place. I'm going to tell you about my experiences on the water with the $740 Pelican Catch Mode 110 kayak so you can figure out if it's the right purchase for what you need. 

ABOUT THE PELICAN CATCH MODE 110 KAYAK

The Catch Mode 110 features 4 carry handles (1 one on each end and side), a retractable skeg, a suspension-seat that transforms into a booster-seat, a covered front storage with a paddle holder, gear tracks for mounting accessories, 2 bottle holders, traction pads, 3 flush-mount rod holders, and a partridge in a pear…I mean, and bungees in the rear tank well for securing a crate or dry bag. Most kayaks are rotomolded. The Catch Mode 110 kayak takes a different approach called thermoforming. This is a process that makes the two pieces of the kayak's hull separate before welding them together. The end result is a lightweight yet durable design. This leads me to my first personal note on the Catch Mode 110.

Pelican Catch Mode 110

How portable is the Pelican Catch Mode 110?

The Pelican Catch Mode 110 is quite light compared to most sit-on-top fishing kayaks. So that's a plus. Its sub-11-foot design also aids in the overall portability. Once a kayak gets over 12-feet in length, it becomes a lot more awkward to move around on your own. The large side grab handles complete the solo-mission trifecta by allowing for a suitcase-style carry to and from the water. One thing I immediately noticed and appreciated about these handles is that they have lots of clearance. So your fingers don't get pinched (a common problem with side handles). So overall, the Catch Mode 110 has good portability compared to the competition – not so much relative to actual portable kayaks, but you have to calibrate these things accordingly. 

How stable is a Pelican Catch Mode 110 kayak? 

The Catch Mode 110 felt very solid in all three positions: normal, sitting in the elevated position, and while standing. Good stability is important in the latter two positions. Because the higher you can get, the more perspective you'll have when it comes to the fishing part. Sitting higher or standing in the boat raises your center-of-gravity, which inherently chips away at the overall stability. The design of the Catch Mode 110 is able to compensate beautifully for the stability. 

How does the Pelican Catch Mode 110 perform?

This kayak's primary goal is to be a stable platform for fishing. Its short, wide, sit-on-top body is simply not designed to be a speed machine. There are no 10 to 11-foot kayak designed for speed. The Catch Mode 110 is not the kayak to effortlessly glide long distances or go anywhere at a high-octane pace. This is no fault of Pelican, it is just the nature of this particular kayak.

Retractable Skeg

The retractable skeg made a noticeable difference in terms of improving the tracking. At least the energy you'll spend paddling across the pond won't be wasted with constant course corrections. Once you put the skeg down, it cannot be retracted again from within the cockpit. Instead, you would have to paddle to shore and do it manually. In higher-end models this is usually a two-way street and something that you can control right from your seat. The Catch Mode 110 is easy to turn (the performance plus-side of a short boat). 

Adjustable paddle

Something that's worth noting is that I used an adjustable paddle (Wilderness Systems Pungo Glass) for this gear test. I quite liked this paddle and I do recommend that you check it out. I recommend that you get an adjustable paddle to go with this kayak. The reason being is that the ideal paddle length will change based on your seating position. When I was in the lower seating position, I had my Pungo Glass set to 232-234 cm. In the elevated position I maxed it out to 240cms and would have liked a little bit more. The pedestal position is really more of a fishing-specific set-up, so it's just worth considering if you will be paddling much from up there. This is something that you can tinker with over time. 

Is the Pelican Catch Mode 110 comfortable?

Being able to switch through so many positions (low/normal, cross-legged, elevated, and standing) does boost the comfort of this kayak. The Catch Mode 110 has a suspension seat, which I always sing the praises of since it forms so well to whoever is sitting in it. It's also a wide seat, which expands the spectrum of who can sit comfortably in it.

Back support

A little nitpick is that the back support is a smidge high for my liking. I wish there were more lumbar support, that would further boost the overall comfort of this seat. A critique is that the seat has some give to it, which means that it shifts from side to side as you paddle or lean over the edge. This isn't the first time I've encountered this annoyance with suspension seats. It's an easy enough fix since you can stuff some material between the seat and the sides of the kayak. You shouldn't have to do that. I'd love to see Pelican address this in future upgrades.

Footpegs

I maxed out the footpegs on the Catch Mode 110 because I am 6′ 2″ and long in the legs. This was still perfect for me but if you're any taller then you will not have the same experience. Your knees will bend up too high, which will detract from the comfort and impede your paddling. In the other direction, the foot pegs come surprisingly far forward. So if you're shorter then you'll be laughing. 

Pelican Catch Mode 110 features

Some yes, and a couple…not so much. I was a fan of the bow storage area and the cover that comes with it. For me, this is usually a bit of a dead zone. I'm an out-of-sight, out-of-mind kind of guy. So if there's a hatch there then I tend to forget about whatever I put in it. The removable cover gives the option to stow gear, in full-view of the paddler at all times. You can ditch the cover and just keep the front of the boat nice and open. If you like to bring a small to medium sized dog with you on your fishing adventures then this will be a good area for him/her to perch. 

Water bottle holder

Another cool feature was the bungee-style water bottle holder (one on each side). It's easy to get dehydrated when kayak fishing and it was nice to have my trustee Naglene in front of me the whole time without sloshing about in the boat. That's another common complaint with big, open platforms. A water bottle knocking around in a storage compartment or just in the cockpit can scare off the fish. The water bottle design was well thought out by Pelican. 

Gear tracks

A design misstep was the placement of the gear tracks. The idea is that they open the door to a wealth of accessories. However, anything you mount on these gear tracks will get knocked by your paddle. They're simply in the wrong place. They needed to go further forward, or even better, behind the seat. I initially thought the same thing about the third rod holder. The rod holder is placed for when you are standing in the kayak. I wasn't able to visualize a saving-grace for the gear tracks though. 

Otherwise, I already mentioned the mostly pros of the seat and then the minor and medium-sized cons. The retractable skeg is a nice feature. It comes with the downside of not being able to draw it back up from inside the kayak.

Is the Pelican Catch Mode 110 worth it?

Despite the occasional quirks, the Catch Mode 110 is easily worth the $740 (USD). For a fishing-specific kayak with these kinds of features, that is a very fair price. There are only a handful of comparable kayaks in this class. One of them is the Perception Pescador, which I tested/reviewed last year. That was another quality boat. I would now have to give the crown to the Pelican Catch Mode 110 because of the comfier suspension seat. 

Who is the Catch Mode 110 kayak for?

Just because this kayak has great value doesn't mean it's the right choice for everyone. That said, the Catch Mode 110 is a versatile kayak. The Pelican Catch Mode 110 is a great kayak for people new to the world of kayak fishing. It would work for people who like to dabble in the sport but also enjoy heading out for a casual paddle. I even think it's a reasonable choice for hard-core anglers, since they tend to customize their boats anyway. I could see a seasoned vet decking this thing out with some better placed gear tracks. Having a great time while also saving a lot of money.

As I mentioned before, the only thing the Pelican Catch Mode 110 really lacks is the paddling efficiency for long stretches and the ability to out-sprint competitors. Its purpose is to offer a stable platform for anglers and recreational kayakers.

The Showdown features an elevated frame-seat with a junk drawer underneath. It also has double barrel rod holders on both sides, four heavy-duty handles (one at each end, one on each side), and the side handles double as gear tracks for adding accessories. In terms of storage, there is a removable and portable bow pod, and the stern tank well has bungees and is crate-ready. Finally, given that this is a pedal fishing kayak, it of course has hand controls to operate the rutter. 

Side Note on Safety:

Before we get into my personal thoughts on the Perception Showdown, I wanted to give a quick shout-out to the American Canoe Association (ACA) free online paddling course. I know these things are tempting to skip over, but I highly recommend you take the time to check it out. Paddling is generally safe and enjoyable, but when things do go wrong, they can escalate quickly. Often, a bit of key information can make the difference between an inconvenience and a disaster. And did I mention it was free? If you're reading this blog then that means you're probably already at your computer, so go ahead and click this link to find out more. 

How portable is the Perception Showdown 11.5?

Well, 90 pounds is a lot to lug around. This is relatively manageable compared to some fishing kayaks that can weigh as much as 120 pounds, but still, this is a hefty boat. You really should consider a kayak cart. And if not, you should bring some strong buddies along for the day. Even more ideal would be if you have a trailer to tow this thing and to prioritize sites with a boat launch. That way you won't have to drag the Showdown to and from the water. 

Is the Perception Showdown Stable? 

This kayak was specifically designed to be a stable platform to fish from. It has done that job wonderfully. The seat is in a high-position, which is great for getting a lay of the land (or water), but this also raises the center of gravity quite a bit. Even so, there was not even an inkling of instability to be felt. The elevated sitting position also makes it easy to stand up, which felt rock solid in this boat. This is what I hoped for from a 36-inch-wide platform. Stable, stable, 100% stable. 

How does the Perception Showdown kayak perform? 

Typically when you have a very wide, flat, stable kayak, you naturally lose a fair amount of speed. That's certainly the case with the Perception Showdown. But this is what I expected and therefore, I wasn't disappointed. No one has found that magic formula to circumnavigate the basic laws of physics (…yet!). All that being said, for how chunky this boat is, I thought the pedal-drive-system moved it along surprisingly well. 

Is a pedal fishing kayak maneuverable? 

I found that with the assistance of a paddle, the 11.5-foot Showdown turned like how a shorter kayak should. Unfortunately, the built-in pedal and steering system alone doesn't turn this kayak very fast, or with a tight radius. Again, given how much water this thing has to displace, it makes sense that it's not a nimble boat. So just a heads up to future Showdown owners, whenever I wanted to turn sharply, I just picked up my paddle to help make it happen. Having a paddle on-hand is far from a deal-breaker. In fact, if you do want to stand up at all then it's a must-have anyway. 

Is the Perception Showdown comfortable? 

Oh yes! The suspension seat is like a beautiful butt pillow, and the low-lumbar support is great too. Even with all the pedaling, I felt comfy and secure. And whenever you get tired, the reclined position induces instant naps. This is where the superior stability comes into play again. Whether I was pedaling, kicking back, or standing up and stretching out, there was never any weeble-wobble. This allowed me to relax fully. 

How are the features on the Perception Showdown?

For starters, I was very impressed with the pedal-system. It was smooth and easy to work in both the forward and reverse directions. The only thing to be aware of is that the pedals don't kick up at all, which means if you collide with anything beneath the surface, they are going to take the full brunt of the impact. So I certainly recommend steering clear or shallow, rocky waters or you could do some damage pretty quickly. 

I also thought the removable storage pod was a really cool feature. I like that at the bookends of your adventure how you can bring it into the garage or storage area and load/unload it easily, without having to be within reach of the more cumbersome kayak. 

The side handles/gear tracks are an intelligent use of the space. Normally, if you were paddling, having accessories on the side would impede your stroke. But you don't have to worry about that in a pedal kayak. I could see a lot of good utility coming from these features. 

One optional add-on that I appreciated was the soft-shelled storage unit that clips onto the side of the seat. It's the perfect size for a tackle box or any other little goodies you might want to have close by. Plus, I found that it acted as a nice hand rest while I was cruising around and steering with my opposite arm. 

The only feature that didn't wow me was the junk-drawer under the seat. It didn't get in the way or anything, but I just found it to be a little small and flimsy. Maybe that's something that would come into play with a prolonged fishing session.

Is the Perception Showdown 11.5 worth it?  

Well, it depends on who's asking. This kayak is for a specific niche. Not everyone would value a heavy, pedal kayak at this price-point. However, those who are in the market for this type of boat would really value the Perception Showdown 11.5. Sure, you are paying a premium for the loads of quality features in this thing, but the Showdown is still on the less-expensive end of the pedal fishing kayak spectrum. If you are a passionate angler who wants a stable, comfortable, hands-free craft, then I'm confident that you will get tremendous value out of this kayak.

Best Use: Flat Water/Fishing

One of the key features of the RS117 kayak is its catamaran hull design. The hull design also has replaceable dual skid plates. On top, it has a rod and paddle stow on both sides. There are fat grip handles at the bow and stern, plus side carry handles. In addition, it has a forward storage well with a transducer scupper for a fish finder unit. Inside the kayak there are adjustable foot braces, a dry pod, YakAttack MightyMount tracks, traction pads for standing, a high/low, extra-wide frame seat, two flush mount rod holders, a large crate-friendly tank-well, and a stern access plate for hull entry. Finally, this boat is rudder-ready, which means you can install a rudder without drilling any holes. Not a bad list of features! Now let's talk about how it all comes together on the water. 

First Impressions of the Bonafide kayak review

After paddling around on a calm lake for about an hour, my initial thoughts were generally positive, but with some clear caveats. I enjoyed my time in the Bonafide RS117, though I saw some room for improvement. Let's start with its stand-out strength. 

Is the RS117 kayak stable? 

You betcha. The exceptional stability of the RS117 was one of its defining attributes. For both a recreational kayak and a fishing kayak, this is one of the most stable platforms you could ask for (owing in large part to the catamaran hull). Interestingly, the remarkable stability didn't necessarily jump out in regards to the initial stability (i.e. how the kayak feels when sitting flat).

This boat has a bit of rock to it. However, once that tip reaches a certain angle, the momentum seems to get rejected and the boat easily recenters itself. It is therefore the secondary stability that elevates the RS117 to omega-level heights.

Good luck trying to flip this thing! I was leaning right out over the side and it wouldn't budge any further. Standing is easy, and I found it most comfortable with my weight shifted more to one leg, since that put the kayak on edge, which seems to be the preferred state. 

How does the Bonafide RS117 perform?

If you've been following along with my kayak reviews then you know that it's typical for a stable kayak to be on the slower side. That is simply part of the design trade-off. The RS117 is no exception to this rule. This boat is not going to win you any races, but that's not what it's trying to do. It's not the slowest kayak I've paddled, but I certainly wasn't getting the output I wanted out of my bursts of aggressive paddling. 

Is the Bonafide RS117 kayak comfortable? 

The big, wide, sit-on-top platform makes the RS117 inherently comfortable. Unfortunately, the seat didn't deliver like I was hoping it would. The lower-back support is nice, but otherwise it seems that the seat is designed for sitting back and relaxing (which would come into play while fishing), rather than active paddling.

While I was covering ground, I was aware of the awkward gap between the seat and the back support. Maybe it's just me, maybe it's just my butt. I think a more versatile seat would certainly help boost the appeal of the RS117 as a general, recreational kayak. But if you're someone who wants to mostly kick-back while out on the water, then I'm sure you'll appreciate the comfort a lot more. 

In terms of sizing, I should point out that my 6′ 2″ frame was a bit much for this kayak's setup when I had the seat in its low position. Even with the foot pegs set as far forward as they would go, my knees still had a substantial bend. I would have liked to get them straighter, and that certainly would have enhanced my comfort level. This did happen when I moved the seat into the high-position, which freed up another couple of inches, but it would have been nice to freely utilize both settings without issue. I'm well within the weight parameters for the RS117, so no problems there. Just a note for anyone around my height or taller – this kayak probably isn't for you. 

Is the Bonafide RS117 worth it?

For a fishing kayak, the RS117 is moderately priced and loaded with features. Not only are they plentiful, but they are well thought out too. I appreciated all of the storage compartments and positioning of the gear tracks. These would certainly come into play for anglers, but also for casual paddlers who want to pack some goodies and maybe even film their days on the water. In either case, don't expect a speed demon, note that the seat could be improved for prolonged paddling, and be aware that tall folks might feel cramped. But otherwise, this is a well-stocked, super stable kayak that is worth it for the applicable demographics.
