The Maah Daah Hey Trail is a 144-mile single track through the rugged badlands of western North Dakota. It’s the longest continuous non-motorized single track trail in the United States. This stunning route calls to hikers, bikers, and adventurers chasing the spirit of the Old West. From steep buttes to quiet prairies, the Maah Daah Hey Trail captures the raw beauty of America’s Great Plains.

Where the Maah Daah Hey Trail Connects Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The Maah Daah Hey Trail runs from Medora to Watford City, North Dakota.
It links the north and south units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This connection lets adventurers explore some of the park’s most scenic and untouched landscapes.
Start at either end and you’ll discover rolling hills, painted cliffs, and wide-open skies.
Wildlife sightings are common—bison, prairie dogs, and eagles often appear along the trail.

The terrain shifts constantly. Expect steep climbs, twisting descents, and long, flat stretches perfect for biking or backpacking. Many trailheads and access points make it easy to plan your route. Choose a full thru-hike or a shorter day trip, each offers unforgettable views.

When to Visit the Maah Daah Hey Trail

Aerial view of the Maah Daah Hey Trail in North Dakota on a rainy day

North Dakota’s four seasons create very different experiences on the Maah Daah Hey Trail. Late spring and early summer are best, with mild weather and fewer bugs.
Summer can be hot, but nights usually cool down fast, so pack layers. Winter brings snow—sometimes over 50 inches—making travel difficult but breathtaking. The trail becomes quiet and still, covered in white beauty. Spring and fall can be unpredictable, so prepare for sudden changes in temperature or weather.

Camping and Gear Essentials on the Maah Daah Hey Trail

Camping is one of the best ways to experience the Maah Daah Hey Trail. Outside of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, dispersed camping is allowed for a true backcountry feel. Inside the park, you’ll need a permit to camp overnight. There are also developed campgrounds for those who prefer amenities.

The landscape offers little shade, so be ready for full exposure. Pack sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water. A water filter is essential for longer trips. Trekking poles help on rocky terrain, and a lightweight puffy jacket keeps you warm at night.

Be aware of wildlife and insects. Rattlesnakes, ticks, and mosquitoes live here, so bring bug spray and wear long socks. Before your trip, make sure you’re ready for North Dakota’s changing weather. Check out our guide on Hiking Gear That Can Save Your Life for smart packing tips.

Logistics & Access

The Maah Daah Hey offers multiple access points and trailheads, making it flexible for shorter outings or long haul trips. For example, official maps list trailheads at the CCC Campground (north end) and Burning Coal Vein Campground (south end). Shuttle services are also available from nearby towns such as Medora, which is useful for one-way thru-hikers or cyclists. Because the trail is point-to-point, plan your transport accordingly. Also check the recent trail condition alerts on the official association site.

Water & Camp-Spacing Realities

One of the most critical logistical issues on the Maah Daah Hey is water. While nine or more developed campgrounds along the route have hand-pumped potable water (seasonal), outside of those you must treat wild sources or cache ahead. The trail’s official map lists eight designated water-cache box sites for thru-hikers. Because segments between reliable water and camps can stretch 18–25 miles, you’ll need to carry extra water, especially in hot/dry conditions. Also, note that some traditional water sources (springs, tanks) may be unreliable or non-potable.

Terrain and Difficulty Near Theodore Roosevelt National Park Badlands

The terrain on the Maah Daah Hey is wildly variable: you’ll find steep climbs and descents across bentonite clay soil, rolling prairie tops, canyon rims, and badland terrain adjacent to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park units. While many sections are rideable for experienced mountain bikers (trail is IMBA “Epic” rated) North Dakota Tourism hikers still should expect strenuous segments, and dynamic weather: high heat in summer, significant snow in winter, frequent exposure to wind and sun. For best conditions aim for late spring/early summer or early fall—these seasons provide milder weather and fewer bugs.

Mountain Biking the Maah Daah Hey Trail

Start at trailheads like the Buffalo Gap Campground (south end) or the CCC Campground (north end). These give easy vehicle access into the system. The nearby access roads are mostly gravel and suitable for standard vehicles — but high clearance helps.

Man mountain biking on the Maah Daah Hey Trail in North Dakota

Some of the most popular mountain-bike friendly sections include:

  • The stretch from Buffalo Gap to Wannagan, which rides open and rolling through prairie and badlands terrain.
  • The section from Elkhorn to Magpie, which features the scenic river crossing of the Little Missouri River and views from Devil’s Pass.
  • The northern segment near the China Wall and Bennett Campground. This section is rugged, remote and highly scenic for experienced riders.

Important note: Bicycles are not allowed inside the boundaries of Theodore Roosevelt National Park along the trail, so make sure to use the alternative detours around the park units when biking.

Let me know if you’d like a detailed map of the key bike sections with parking coordinates for your ride.

Why the Maah Daah Hey Trail Is Worth the Journey

The Maah Daah Hey Trail is more than a physical challenge—it’s a journey through time and wilderness. Its landscapes inspired the spirit of the Old West and the vision of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Standing among the colorful buttes and endless skies, you feel history come alive.

From glowing sunsets to friendly faces in Medora, every mile tells a story.
Whether you hike, bike, or backpack, the Maah Daah Hey Trail offers adventure, solitude, and wonder.

The inflatable Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 has earned a reputation as one of the most versatile portable fishing boats on the market, especially for anglers looking for a lightweight, stable craft that performs well in both rivers and inshore saltwater. After extended use (including filming a full episode of Road Trip Angler and fishing the flats around Wrightsville Beach) the FishSkiff 16 has continued to hold up to demanding conditions, heavy gear, and multi-day trips.

This updated review covers long-term durability, new rigging upgrades, and how the boat performs when powered by both a 5hp Honda Outboard and a Torqeedo Travel 903 electric motor.

Build & Durability: A Rigid Drop-Stitch Platform That Holds Up Over Time

The FishSkiff 16 uses drop-stitch construction in both the hull and the floor, giving the inflatable skiff an impressively rigid feel during acceleration, poling, and sight-fishing. Even after extended use in saltwater, the boat’s inflatable components have shown no structural issues, leaks, or softening.

The only long-term wear noted comes from seat hardware sourced off-the-shelf, which is prone to rust in saltwater environments, a common issue for steel swivel mounts, regardless of brand. This is not a Sea Eagle manufacturing defect, but anglers who fish primarily in saltwater may want to upgrade to a corrosion-resistant swivel system.

Power Options: Gas and Electric

One of the biggest advantages of the FishSkiff 16 is its flexibility in propulsion. The boat performs well with both:

  • Honda 5hp Outboard: Delivers strong upriver performance and excellent speed for longer runs.
  • Torqeedo Travel 903 electric motor: Provides quiet operation, ideal for flats and inshore scenarios where stealth is important. While slower than gas, it offers impressive range and serves as both a primary and trolling motor.

The transom handles both configurations easily, and the skiff remains stable even when fully loaded with gear.

Fishing Performance: Built for Two Anglers

While the Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 is rated for three passengers, two anglers is the ideal configuration for comfort, deck space, and visibility. With two adults onboard, the craft remains stable while standing, casting, and moving around the deck.

  • Sight fishing: Elevated standing positions (added through custom rigging) significantly improve visibility on the flats.
  • Stability: Excellent, even in chop.
  • Maneuverability: Responsive whether powered by gas, electric, or a push pole.

For anglers targeting species like redfish, sheepshead, or river bass, the FishSkiff 16 functions much like a lightweight poling skiff.

Rigging Upgrades: Navigation, Storage, and Casting Platforms

A major appeal of the FishSkiff 16 is how customizable the platform is. Recent upgrades include a wide range of RAILBLAZA accessories, all mounted using StarPort HD bases.

Bow & Deck Additions

  • RAILBLAZA NaviPack: Red and green bow lights and a 360° stern light (both battery-powered) mount via removable StarPorts, essential for early-morning or after-dark sessions.
  • Elevated casting platform: An aluminum plate paired with a teak cutting board creates a raised sight-fishing deck. Even an extra 6 to 7 inches of height makes a noticeable difference on the flats.
  • Rod holders, cup holders & accessory mounts: Upgraded to StarPort HD systems for durability and modularity.

Electronics

The skiff is rigged for an Lowrance Elite FS, which mounts easily to added track and StarPort mounts.

While this setup does not currently use a transducer, adding one is simple due to multiple mounting points on the transom and deck.

Mid-Boat & Seating Modifications

The standard rear seat has been replaced with an Orion 35 cooler, providing:

  • A second elevated standing platform
  • Integrated side tracks for cup holders or tool storage
  • Additional room for food, drinks, and cold storage on longer trips

Paddle and push-pole clips keep accessories secure and accessible without obstructing fly lines or footwork.

Transom & Stern Rigging

The Torqeedo motor mounts cleanly on the transom and provides excellent low-noise operation for stalking redfish, drum, and other shallow-water targets.

On-Water Experience

Across rivers, flats, and inshore channels, the Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 continues to deliver solid performance:

  • Stable under load
  • Quiet in shallow water
  • Highly maneuverable when poling
  • Capable of handling two anglers plus gear comfortably
  • Easy to launch without a ramp

The drop-stitch hull gives the boat a rigid, fiberglass skiff feel, while still being lightweight enough to transport and store like an inflatable.

Who Is the Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 For?

This boat is an excellent match for anglers who need:

  • A portable fishing skiff that can be stored in a garage or transported in a truck or SUV
  • A stable, customizable platform for inshore saltwater and river fishing
  • Dual power options for both long runs and stealth-focused shallow-water approaches
  • A craft that handles sight fishing, poling, and multi-rig setups

With its mix of portability, durability, and fishability, the Sea Eagle FishSkiff 16 offers impressive value as a compact inshore boat.

The Weldcraft Ocean King 240 isn’t just another aluminum fishing boat, it’s a true offshore workhorse built for large bodies of water. We recently took the 240 Ocean King out on the Great Lakes to put it to the test in real-world offshore conditions.

Weldcraft has been building robust, heavy-gauge fishing boats for six decades. Designed for serious anglers, the Ocean King 240 fishing boat offers more interior space, comfort, and performance, engineered to be a “sanctuary of stability and versatility” for demanding water conditions.

arial view of fishing on lake michigan and lake erie in the ocean king 240 fishing boat from weldcraft review and test

Ocean King 240 Specifications and Hull Features

Measuring in at 27 feet 3 inches overall with the offshore bracket, the Ocean King 240 is slightly longer than its 24-foot designation. The beam is 8 feet 6 inches with a bottom width of 7 feet 6 inches, giving it a solid platform for comfort. The sides are .125 inches thick aluminum, and the bottom is upgraded to .25 inches for added durability, ideal for rocky shorelines, ice, or rough water.

The bow features a 32 degree dead rise, tapering to 28 degree midship and 18 degree at the transom, complemented by a full-length reverse chine. The design channels water away, enhances lift, improves fuel efficiency, and keeps the ride dry in chop. The model we tested carried a 425 HP Yamaha, while 2025 models are rated up to 400 HP, with an 84-gallon standard fuel tank (upgradeable to 121 gallons). Maximum capacity is 1,485 lbs of passengers and gear.

Standard features on the Ocean King 240 include a welded bow rail, diamond plate self-draining floor, spray guard, anchor locker, and optional anchor roller. The wide, 39.5 inch sides provide exceptional protection against splash and waves, crucial for fishing in large bodies of water.

Ocean King 240 Comfort & Cabin Amenities

The cabin is designed with comfort and usability in mind. Captain and passenger seats are heavy-duty suspension models, with optional heating. Bench seats along the sides convert into a bed, ideal for resting while underway. Storage is abundant in the Ocean King 240, with compartments beneath the seats, in the cabin, and along the roofline with secure mesh covers.

Optional features like a diesel heater and sliding windows can extend your boating season by keeping the cabin warm. Additional amenities include a glove box, cubbies for phones and small gear, and optional electric head with holding tank, providing convenience for longer trips.

Ocean King 240 Helm & Electronics Hub

The helm on the Ocean King 240 is a true command center, featuring multiple integrated Garmin 1243xsv screens for navigation. The autopilot on the kicker motor allows hands-free trolling from anywhere on the boat, while the stereo and radio ensure connectivity and entertainment. Standard switch panels, trim tab controls, and USB ports make managing electronics intuitive. The helm layout supports fast, precise maneuvers both in rough water and at trolling speeds.

Ocean King 240 Cockpit & Fishing Boat Features

The cockpit is where the Ocean King 240 stands out. Wide, 8 inch gunnels act as a blank canvas for customization, with room for rod tracks, downriggers, and mounts. Storage runs along both sides, including rod lockers and compartments, tackle, and hoses. The composite deck is fully self-draining, grippy, and easy to clean.

The rear features the standard offshore bracket, moving the main motor off the transom for better performance and providing ample workspace. Beneath the cockpit on the Ocean King 240 are large fish boxes, live wells, battery access, and plumbing for optional wash-down pumps. Additional fold-down steps double as extra seating or boarding aids.

Ocean King 240 Performance

With six adults on board, full fuel, and gear, the Ocean King 240 cruised comfortably between 20 and 30 miles per hour at half throttle, with a potential top speed of 54 miles per hour. The reverse chine and carefully designed dead rise provide a lift that reduces drag, channels water away, and keeps the boat remarkably dry.

Maneuverability & Stability

Despite its 27 foot overall length, the Ocean King 240 handles like a smaller boat. The reverse chine and robust hull geometry allow precise control at both low trolling speeds and high-speed runs. Stability is exceptional, even with multiple people moving around, thanks to the wide beam, reverse chine, and trim tabs.

Durability

Weldcraft’s welded aluminum construction, upgraded bottom thickness, and composite deck ensures that the Ocean King 240 is designed to last. With nearly 60 years of boat manufacturing, Weldcraft continues to deliver boats built for commercial or serious recreational use. There is no wood anywhere in the deck or cabin, eliminating the potential of rot.

Comfort

The Ocean King 240 balances space and usability perfectly. Heavy-duty seats, bench-to-bed conversion, optional diesel heater, and weatherproof cabin design allows for long days on the water, regardless of the weather. Storage is abundant and strategically placed for convenience and safety, making the boat feel organized and comfortable under full load.

Fishability

The Ocean King 240 is purpose-built for anglers. The cockpit layout, wide gunnels, offshore bracket, live wells, and versatile rigging options make it ideal for trolling, downrigging, or multiple fishing techniques simultaneously.

Rigging

Factory rigging is highly capable, with options for custom electronics, rod holders, track systems, and downriggers. The layout of the Ocean King 240 creates a blank canvas, allowing anglers to tailor the boat to their style and fishing objectives, whether targeting salmon, trout, or other large freshwater species.

Value & Price

The starting price of the Ocean King 240 is around $160,000 for a standard model, and reaching over $200,000 when fully loaded. The Ocean King 240 is a premium boat investment. The price reflects the lifetime hull warranty, Weldcraft’s decades of experience, and a boat that is truly built to last. For serious anglers or families navigating big water, it’s a buy once, buy right proposition.

Who Is This Fishing Boat For?

The Ocean King 240 is designed for tackling large lakes, northern waters, and regions with unpredictable weather. The cabin, modular design, and heavy-gauge construction make this boat ideal for extended trips, and rough water. Whether fishing solo, with friends, or with family, this boat offers a stable, and highly capable platform for all water adventures.

The Weldcraft Ocean King 240 proves itself as a high-performance, versatile, and durable fishing boat. From cockpit to cabin, it’s built to handle big water and keep anglers comfortable, productive, and confident.

A Georgian Bay kayaking trip is one of the most breathtaking adventures you can experience in Ontario. Stretching off the northeast corner of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay is home to more than 30,000 islands, endless pink granite shorelines, and iconic windswept pines.

Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a beginner looking for a peaceful getaway, a Georgian Bay kayak touring trip offers an unforgettable combination of natural beauty, exploration, and freedom. I hope this Georgian Bay Kayak Touring and Camping Guide helps you to plan your perfect paddling adventure.

sixth great lake

Why the Georgian Bay Trip is So Special

Often called the “Sixth Great Lake,” Georgian Bay is massive—nearly 190 kilometers long and 90 kilometers wide. What makes a Georgian Bay paddling trip truly unique is its maze of islands that protect paddlers from wind and waves. These islands not only create calm and accessible waters but also provide countless opportunities for wild camping.

georgian bay paddling trip

Much of the land here is Crown land, meaning paddlers can camp almost anywhere, while Provincial Parks like French River offer designated sites for those who prefer a bit more structure.

Planning Your Kayak Touring Trip for the Georgian Bay

The best section for a Georgian Bay kayak touring trip stretches about 120 kilometers between Killarney and Parry Sound. Along this route, you’ll find highlights like Philip Edward Island, French River Provincial Park, and the Mink Islands. There are plenty of launch points—Killarney, Key River, Britt, Bayfield Inlet, and Snug Harbour—so you can plan day trips or multi-day journeys.

launch points in georgian bay

Sea kayaks and touring kayaks are the ideal craft for Georgian Bay’s open water conditions. While canoes can be used, they’re better suited for calm weather and protected channels. Outfitters like Killarney Outfitters and White Squall make planning simple, offering rentals, shuttles, and gear to support your adventure.

Georgian Bay Kayak Camping and Safety

Camping on a Georgian Bay kayak touring trip means sleeping on smooth granite rock under the stars. Because soil is scarce, bring a thick sleeping pad and use guy lines to secure your tent on windy nights. There are no pit toilets on most islands, so plan to dig cat holes responsibly and stay at least 60 meters from the water.

camping kayak trip on the Georgian Bay, Ken Whiting

Safety is key because the wind in Georgian Bay can shift suddenly and the water remains cold throughout the summer. Even in July, water temperatures hover around 18°C (65°F). Paddlers should dress for immersion and always prepare to spend an unexpected night on the islands if conditions change.

If you plan to camp within the provincial park, you’ll need to reserve a designated campsite in advance. There’s also plenty of Crown land available for free camping, as well as private land to avoid. Use the Crown Land Atlas to identify where you can stay and map out your campsite plan ahead of time.

When to Go and What to Expect

The best time for a Georgian Bay kayak touring trip is between June and August, when the water is warmest and the winds are lightest. Shoulder seasons in spring or fall can be rewarding for experienced paddlers but require proper gear for cold water.

Georgian Bay kayak touring guide by Ken Whiting

Fishing enthusiasts will also find plenty of excitement, with species like lake trout, pike, and bass thriving in the bay’s clear waters. And when you’re done paddling, small towns like Killarney and Parry Sound offer cozy lodges, bakeries, and cafes to refuel before heading home.

Endless Possibilities of Kayaking Georgian Bay

No matter where you launch from or how long you stay, every Georgian Bay paddling trip feels like an exploration of something wild and untouched. The combination of rugged beauty, accessible camping, and serene paddling routes makes it one of North America’s most rewarding destinations for kayakers and canoeists alike.

When it comes to enjoying a day out in the woods, having the right daypack can make all the difference. Out on the Eno River’s Eagle Trail, a hidden gem along North Carolina’s Mountains-to-Sea Trail, you can feel how underrated some hikes can be. While massive mountain treks get all the glory, there’s something special about weekday afternoons spent exploring your own backyard trails. I used this hike to review the Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24.

eno river eagle trail, hiking backpack, mystery ranch 24 Rip Ruck backpack

The Eno River’s Eagle Trail winds through lush North Carolina scenery, alternating between dense woodlands and open areas where you can take a minute to play around in the creek, if you feel so inclined.

Testing the Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24L Hiking Backpack

On this particular adventure, the pack of choice was the Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24L. One thing I like about MR is the build quality of their bags. Everything they make stands out as EXTREMELY rugged and resilient. Mystery Ranch started by creating packs for military use, and that durability still shows in their hiking line today.

Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24 Day Backpack
Mystery Ranch Rip Ruck 24 Backpack

The Rip Ruck features a unique “rip-open” front panel for quick access, ideal for grabbing gear on the go. Inside, it has a laptop sleeve, pencil pockets, and dual front compartments that open just as easily. For day hikers and photographers, these compartments work perfectly for camera lenses or small essentials.

The straps are thick and memory-foam padded, giving it that “turtle shell” look that stays put while moving. There are only a couple drawbacks with this one – being that there's no water bottle pocket—but tossing one inside works just fine. The other is that this pack may be overbuilt based on your individual needs. The extra weight doesn't bother me – and the backpack is still very comfortable. It’s versatile enough to take from the woods, to the office, and even to the gym, which makes it one of the best hiking backpacks for everyday use too. I use this one for pretty much everything.

Finding Joy in Local Adventures

The day wrapped up with a solid sighting of a great blue heron, a perfect moment that reminded us why we hike in the first place. I'm always trying to get good shots of these things.

You don’t always need epic mountaintop views or faraway destinations to reconnect with nature. Sometimes, the best adventures are close to home.

So next time you see an ordinary trail near your town, grab your hiking backpack, pack the essentials (read about my top must-haves for any hike), and head out. Whether it’s a quick afternoon escape or a full-day hike, you’ll find that being out there—anywhere—is what really matters.

Over the past couple of years, filming for Epic Trails ha taken me to some incredible places: hiking among the dramatic cliffs of the Faroe Islands, trekking through the wild rainforests of Costa Rica, exploring rugged Scotland with my dad, and backpacking across the open prairies of North Dakota. Whenever I'm on a trip, I'm travelling with guests, a crew, and sometimes a liaison from local organizations. Because of the wild nature of our shoots, almost anything and everything can happen. Delays, dangerous conditions, sudden shifts in weather, and sometimes even getting a little lost are always on the agenda. That's why the production crew at Heliconia and I are covered by Group Travel Insurance (specifically Redpoint Travel Protection)

Adventures Don’t Always Go as Planned

Take the Faroe Islands, for example. The scenery was jaw-dropping, sheer cliffs plunging into the North Atlantic, winding ridgelines, and trails that seemed to disappear into the clouds. But those same stunning landscapes can also be treacherous. High winds, slick rocks, and remote locations mean that a simple misstep could turn into a serious situation.

In Costa Rica, the challenge was different. Between rainforest hikes, river crossings, and waterfall rappels, we were constantly surrounded by wild, unpredictable terrain. A slip on wet ground or a sudden illness far from medical facilities can escalate quickly.

costa rica, travel accident insurance

Even in North Dakota, where I was hiking across open prairie, the remoteness surprised me. It doesn’t take a mountain range to feel isolated, when you’re miles from the nearest road with unpredictable weather rolling in, you realize how vulnerable you can be. When I was hiking on sections of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, I noticed that certain times of year the trail may be impassible due to snow, ice, high water and mud.

And in Scotland, while hiking with my dad, I found myself thinking less like an adventurer and more like a family member responsible for someone else’s well-being. If something had gone wrong on those rocky trails or during one of our road trips through the West Highland Way, I needed to know we’d be taken care of.

Why Group Travel Insurance Matters

No matter how prepared you are, travel involves risk. Group Travel Insurance provides financial protection and peace of mind if something goes wrong. It can cover things like:

  • Emergency medical evacuation from remote areas
  • Hospitalization and medical expenses abroad
  • Accidental death or dismemberment benefits
  • Transportation back home for further care
  • Support for family members if needed

For adventurers like me, this isn’t just about being cautious, it’s about being responsible. Whether I’m filming for Epic Trails or exploring off-camera, I want to focus on the experience, not worry about “what ifs.”

Emergency Evacuation Insurance: A Key Layer of Protection

A solid Travel Accident Insurance plan often works hand-in-hand with Emergency Evacuation Insurance. If you’re injured somewhere far from adequate medical care, evacuation coverage is what gets you to the hospital, whether that means helicopter rescue, specialized ground transport, or even a medical flight home. Be sure to look for Emergency Evacuation Insurance if you a looking to purchase Group Travel Insurance to remote areas.

Before I started traveling the world for the Epic Trails TV show, I didn’t have the budget for top-of-the-line gear. I used whatever I could afford, and that meant a lot of cheap backpacks. But now, after a year of testing everything from $15 discount packs to $400+ ultralight models, I’ve finally had the chance to see what really separates cheap backpacks vs expensive backpacks.

Comfort is Paying for What You Don’t Feel

I'm a big fan of movies and all the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes into making them. There's a popular saying in the world of sound design that goes; “you don't notice good sound design, only bad sound design.” I've found that the same is true in backpacking. the more expensive your backpack, the more invisible it becomes. That’s what you’re really paying for. With cheap backpacks vs expensive backpacks, the difference isn’t how many zippers or compartments you get — it’s how much (or how little) you notice the pack when you’re hiking.

Cheap Backpacks vs Expensive Backpacks, costa rica

My old $15 Temu pack? I remember exactly how it felt digging into my hips and making my back a sweaty mess. My current Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60L is so comfortable I barely notice it’s there, and that’s the point. The same can be said for my Mystery Ranch. You’re paying for comfort and design that lets you focus on your surroundings, not your shoulder pain.

This ISN'T to say that you positively need the expensive stuff. If you are fine with your current setup, I say let it ride.

You Don’t Need to “Level Up” to Be Legit

One of the biggest myths about cheap backpacks vs expensive backpacks is that expensive automatically means “better hiker.” That’s just not true.

Cheap Backpacks vs Expensive Backpacks, hiking arkansas

I know people with serious money who still hike with the same old pack they’ve had for years, because it works for them. And I’ve met adventurers saving every penny to buy their dream pack, and that’s valid too. What matters most is your comfort, your priorities, and your experience on the trail.

My Take on the Whole Cheap vs. Expensive Backpack Debate

At the end of the day, expensive gear exists to give you options — not to rank you in some imaginary outdoor hierarchy. If you can afford the upgrade and want to feel that “invisible” comfort, go for it. If you’re rocking a cheap backpack that gets the job done, that’s great too.

Cheap Backpacks vs Expensive Backpacks, north dakota hiking

So whether you’re saving up for your dream pack or sticking with the one that’s seen a hundred miles already, just remember: it’s not about the price tag — it’s about getting outside and enjoying the adventure.

Arkansas Hiking: Exploring Jasper, the Ozarks, and Beyond https://Hazeadventure.com/arkansas-ozarks-hiking-adventures/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=arkansas-ozarks-hiking-adventures https://Hazeadventure.com/arkansas-ozarks-hiking-adventures/#respond Thu, 09 Oct 2025 06:18:00 +0000 https://Hazeadventure.com/?p=17828 On my recent trip, I explored Jasper and the surrounding wilderness, discovering everything from legendary burgers to mountain trails, thrilling ziplines, and peaceful fly fishing on the White River.

Arkansas hiking offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country, especially in the heart of the Ozarks. I explored Jasper and the surrounding wilderness in Arkansas. Arkansas has legendary burgers, mountain trails, thrilling ziplines, and peaceful fly fishing on the White River. The Arkansas Ozarks should be on your hiking bucket list.

Catch all the Arkansa trails from the beginning—read Exploring the Ozarks of Arkansas.

Starting in Jasper, Arkansas: Food and Views

The adventure began in Jasper, a small town with a big personality. At the Ozark Café, I tackled the infamous Excalibur Burger. They take two patties stacked with all the fixings and sandwich them between grilled cheese buns. It was equal parts delicious and overwhelming, the kind of fuel you need before hitting the trails.

Just minutes outside of Jasper lies Round Top Mountain. This easy trail is perfect for families and rewards hikers with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Ozarks. Not every Arkansas hiking experience has to be extreme—sometimes a short hike with a stunning overlook is exactly what you need.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch: Climbing, Ziplines, and Adventure

For a more adrenaline-filled outing, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is the place to be. Known as an outdoor adventure hub in the Ozarks, it offers rock climbing, via ferrata routes, mountain biking, and one of the tallest and fastest ziplines in Arkansas.

The Via Ferrata at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch (a guided climbing route using cables and rungs) was a highlight. Safe yet exhilarating, it’s a great way to experience vertical terrain without needing advanced climbing skills. Crossing suspended bridges and scaling the rock face, I felt the perfect mix of challenge and excitement. The finale—flying through the fall canopy on a zipline—was an unforgettable Arkansas hiking and adventure experience.

Rock Climbing in the Arkansas Ozark Mountains

The North 40 section of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is home to some of the state’s most iconic climbing routes, with over 500 established climbs. Climbing here felt like solving a puzzle, each move a combination of strength, focus, and balance. For anyone looking to expand their Arkansas hiking trip into new activities, climbing in the Ozarks is both accessible and rewarding.

Fly Fishing on the White River in Arkansas

To balance out the action, I spent a day fly fishing on the White River, one of the premier angling destinations in the U.S. With a patient guide, I learned the rhythm of casting, the thrill of hooking a trout, and the joy of catching a fish that would later be prepared fresh at Gaston’s White River Resort. The calm waters and quiet beauty made this a peaceful counterpoint to the high-energy hiking and climbing of the Ozarks.

Why Arkansas Feels Like a Hiking Playground

What struck me most about this trip is how diverse Arkansas hiking and outdoor activities can be. In one week, I experienced everything from casual family trails to technical climbs, ziplines, and fishing. Locals describe the Ozarks as a playground, and after hiking, climbing, and fishing my way through Jasper and beyond, I couldn’t agree more.

Arkansas hiking isn’t just about the trails—it’s about the variety of experiences that make every day an adventure. If you’re looking for a destination where you can eat well, hike through stunning scenery, and try something new, the Ozarks are waiting.

Traveling with family is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the world. There’s something special about sharing adventures with the people who’ve helped shape your life. Earlier this year, I had the chance to travel to Scotland with my dad. It was one of those bucket-list trips that I'd imagine just about everyone wants to take. (you should.)

Family Travel Insurance, scotland, the west highland way

We hiked sections of the West Highland Way. We explored castles, navigated winding single-track roads, and soaked in the vast expanse of the Highlands. It was everything we’d hoped for… and a few things we didn’t expect.

Those unexpected moments are exactly why I never travel without family travel insurance. For me, the choice is Redpoint Travel Protection. I’ve learned that good travel insurance isn’t just a safety net—it’s peace of mind.

Traveling with Family Adds New Considerations

When I travel solo, I accept a certain amount of risk. I’ve been caught in storms, missed connections, and dealt with the occasional injury in the backcountry. But when you’re traveling with a parent, or kids, for that matter, things can be a little different because it isn't all about you anymore.

family travel insurance: mike and his dad smiling for camera, scotland

Being miles away from cities and towns further complicates the already complicated process of getting medical attention in a foreign country. Honestly, it's complicated enough in my own country of the USA but I digress.

Having that peace of mind goes a long way in making sure that potential problems and logistics are better covered, which is why travel insurance can be so nice.

That’s where family travel insurance makes all the difference. With Redpoint Travel Protection, I know that emergency medical evacuation and support are covered, no matter how far off the beaten path we are.

Delays and Cancellations Happen

Anyone who’s traveled internationally knows that getting there is half the adventure—and sometimes, half the headache. Delays happen, flights can be easily missed, and all sorts of shenanigans can result from the snowballing effect of everyday inconveniences.

Family Travel Insurance takes the guesswork out of travel. Having a Scotland pint

Having family travel insurance can help take the sting out of that situation. Redpoint Travel Protection can cover the unexpected costs of rebooking transportation and accommodations. So, instead of stressing over the logistics, you can grab a pint and laugh it off. And believe me, there are quite a few pints to be found in Scotland.

Travel disruptions are a fact of life, but they don’t have to derail your trip—or your budget.

Covering Gear and Personal Items

As a filmmaker and outdoor enthusiast, I travel with a lot of gear. I bring cameras, hiking equipment, and occasionally some specialized backcountry kits. Losing any of that would be more than an inconvenience.

Family travel insurance with gear protection means that if luggage goes missing or equipment gets damaged, I’m not left footing the entire bill. Thankfully, on this Scotland trip, everything arrived as planned. It’s nice knowing that if it hadn’t, Redpoint had my back.

The Real Benefit: Peace of Mind

One of the best parts of traveling with family is being able to relax and focus on the experience. For me, that means taking responsibility for making sure we’re covered if something goes sideways.

costa rica, Family Travel Insurance

With Redpoint Travel Protection, I don’t just get coverage—I get comprehensive family travel insurance support. Their team specializes in adventure travel, so they understand the kind of trips I take. Whether it’s a backcountry hike in the Cairngorms or navigating travel delays in Glasgow, I know help is just a phone call away.

Family Travel Insurance Worth It?

Family adventures are some of the most meaningful trips you’ll ever take. They can bring you closer together, create memories that last a lifetime, and remind you why travel is worth every bit of effort. But they also come with unique responsibilities.

Family travel insurance isn’t just a checkbox on a booking form, it’s an essential part of traveling smart. Whether you’re hiking in Scotland with your dad, road-tripping across the States, or heading overseas with your kids, make sure you’re protected.

Redpoint travel Insurance, Family Travel Insurance, the west highland way

For me, that’s why I trust Redpoint Travel Protection. Because when I’m out there on the trail with family, I want to focus on the journey—not on what might go wrong.
