I usually recommend something in the 55-65L range for multi-day backpacking trips and the 45L for overnight trips. The Mystery Ranch Bridger 35L backpack is strictly a daypack. Now, obviously daypacks can be much smaller than this if the conditions and personal goals align appropriately.

Bridger 35 Backpack review: a daypack that is designed for comfort to carry weight
Bridger 35 Backpack review: designed for comfort to carry weight

The Bridger 35 is well-suited to folks looking to carry a little extra weight. For example, I'm a photographer, and so I need a lot more volume and load capacity on my day trips. Because this pack has a relatively long torso, it is able to stow things like tripods, trekking poles, or fishing gear. Trying to anchor tall items on a shorter bag usually just ends up in a lot of awkward tipping that will drive you crazy as the miles pass.

Is the Bridger 35L Comfortable?

The Bridger 35L pack was comfortable because it is highly adjustable. Being a daypack, the Bridger 35 forgoes the sleeping bag compartment, bottom loop straps, and front pocket in favor of weight savings.  What it does keep is the adjustable yoke, running vest chest unit, gear loops/attachment points, and double zip flay pocket. This makes the Bridger 35 perfect for climbers, anglers, photographers, and the outdoor enthusiast carrying extra weight.

Lots of gear loops up the back and over the top to attach gear with.
Lots of gear loops up the back and over the top to attach gear with on the Bridger 35L

One feature that still exists, but with a dialed back approach, is the top lip pocket. The Bridger 35 opts for a straight-zipped, envelope-style pocket instead of a horseshoe shaped zipper that opens up to a bigger volume pocket.

Bridger 35 straight zipper at the top makes it hard for stuff to fall out accidentally.
Bridger 35 straight zipper at the top makes it hard for stuff to fall out accidentally.

I actually prefer this design because it still allows me to stow several quick-access essentials in there, but it doesn't inadvertently turn into a leftover junk pocket from which things spill out every time I go to grab something. I would totally support Mystery Ranch changing all the top loaders to the 35-style.

The Bridger 35 retails for $289 (USD) and weighs 3.7 pounds. The same weight and price dynamics that we discussed with the 45 do come into play here. But also transferring over from that conversation is the emphasis on durability, comfort, unique features, and overall comfort.

Bridger 35L Day Hike Pack For You?

Are you experienced in the outdoors and know what you want? You are someone who likes to throw some extracurricular adventures/hobbies in and on the pack. You are not afraid to spend a little more on a day hiking pack because you are looking for comfort and fit. Look no further for your next backpack, check out the Bridger 35 here!

Mystery Ranch continues to knock it out of the park with their Bridger backpacks. I'm a satisfied user of the Bridger 65 and 55 and now I'm stoked to use the Bridger 35 and 45 on my shorter excursions. I now have an amazing selection of Bridger backpacks to use hiking.

I break down the details in this backpack review.

If you've been following along with my adventures and reviews on BackpackingTV, then you know that I've used the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65 and 55 liter backpacks quite extensively. More recently, I've delved into the miniaturized versions, the Bridger 45 and Bridger 35, with continued success.

So if you've been liking my reviews of Mystery Ranch Outdoor backpacks, but have simply been in need of a smaller, lighter option, then your time has finally arrived. Here's my Mystery Ranch Bridger 45L Overnight Backpack Review.

If you want to compare with other similar-size trekking bags, check out another backpack review, the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60.

Can the Bridger 45L backpack be used for overnights?

One of the benefits of a 45L pack is that it forces you to streamline your gear, and look through the lens of a minimal, ultralight backpacker. For my test hike, I went on an overnight trip, in the winter (which means bulkier clothes), and I was still able to get by just fine with my Mystery Ranch Bridger 45L backpack.

Running Vest Chest Straps on the Bridger 45

One of the most unique and functional features on Mystery Ranch's Bridger line of backpacks are the running vest double chest straps. The wide shoulder straps make for a comfortable carry. The chest buckle on most backpacks is usually just for adjusting positioning.

This rig does a great job of evenly dispersing the load's weight. Longtime fans will recall my initial skepticism of this somewhat strange-looking design. That melted away during the first mile of my first trial trek.

Bridger 45L Backpack Adjustable Yoke

Another feature you may have heard me rave about is the adjustable yoke on Mystery Ranch Bridger Backpacks. This adjustable yoke is part of the Bridger backpack design, not just in the bigger bags. The actual internal yoke structure is sandwiched between two pieces of velcro. All you have to do to adjust the torso length, anytime, anywhere, is remove it. Simply slide the shoulder/chest unit up or down, and then reinsert it and rejoin the velcro.

It isn't particularly common to be able to adjust torso length with smaller bags. In fact, many ultra-light backpackers have simply had to make peace with the simplicity of their backpacks. But that's not the case with the Bridger 45 backpack. I like the design approach to allow for a little extra weight in order to prioritize fit, feel, and function. If you're just comparing ounces online, then you won't get to see how well Bridger packs carry a heavy load.

The Articulating Hip Belt on the Bridger 45 Backpack

The accommodating hip belt experience also continues across the Bridger line. The triangular pocket design allows the padded belt to move with your body as you navigate testy terrain.

There are two good-sized pockets on the outside. These snack/phone holders are included, without an add-on upcharge. And to either side, there are big ol' water bottle mesh sleeves.

I like to use one for my Nalgene, and the other for my trekking poles and/or camera tripod. Not all backpacks can fit a Nalgene!

Double Zippered Opening on the Bridger 45

BackpackingTV fans know that I'm all about the flay opening on bags. This allows me to get at anything in my backpack, without having to pull a heap of gear out through the top.

If you go with a strict ultralight backpack, you have to really think about what order you pack things in. If not you'll be wasting time and energy playing tetris on the trail whenever you need a something deep in. A mid-access point allows you to focus on the most efficient way to pack. This allows for heavier, bulkier items to be packed lower in the bag and towards the back. This makes for a better carrying experience.

Sleeping Bag Compartment for Overnight Trips

Another nifty feature that also boosts packing efficiency is the bottom sleeping bag compartment. It has a big opening with a long, straight zipper. U-shaped zippers tend to fail, in my experience. This aids in ease of access. The pack also comes with a compression strap to help reduce the volume of the poofiest piece of gear.

Mystery Ranch Bridger 45 backpack review by Eric Hanson: On my Grand Canyon trip, I used the same kind of external gear connection points to attach my snowshoes to my Bridger 55
On my Grand Canyon trip, I attached my snowshoes to the outside of my Bridger 55 backpack

Multiple External Gear Connection Points

The Bridger 45 comes equipped with lots of extra connection points. There are gear loops for things like ice axes, or in the case of my recent Grand Canyon winter backpacking trip, snow shoes. Even the most efficient packers usually end up needing to attach something to the outside. Don't let the outside of your pack become a junk show, but know that this backpack does offer plenty of flexibility.

Front Stretch Mesh Pocket

One of the points of variation throughout the Mystery Ranch Bridger backpack line is the generous front mesh pocket. This only exists on the 45 and 55 liter options. Compared to the 65 liter bag, which has another full-blown zipper pocket, I prefer the middle-ground approach. The mesh sleeve is great for quick-access items (such as a shell, map, or trail snacks), and it saves on weight.

Bridger 45L Packs Comfortable?

The Mystery Ranch Bridger 45 backpack is probably the most comfortable 45L backpack I've ever used. The many points of contact make each one, regardless of the size (but particularly as you trim down in volume) super responsive and easy to carry. When I'm moving around with the Bridger 45L pack, I feel very nimble. The Bridger 45 pack stays with me without lagging or sloshing, and because of the balanced weight distribution, I never develop hotspots or excessively sore shoulders.

Mystery Ranch Bridger 45 backpack review by Eric Hanson: Bridger 45 is made of 100-denier fabric across most of its exterior!
The Bridger 45 is made of 100-denier fabric across most of its exterior!

Durable Fabric on the Bridger 45

Mystery Ranch uses 100-denier fabric for much of the pack's exterior, with a 330-denier bottom to protect against abrasion in this high-abuse area. This creates another weight vs function tradeoff in which I agree with Mystery Ranch prioritizing durability. Mystery Ranch's roots are in the hunting, firefighting, and military demographics, and so their packs are always up to the task for people who are hard on their gear, or slog through rugged terrain.

Minor Critiques of the Bridger 45

I continue to wish that Mystery Ranch would make the bottom loop straps longer. This area is meant for attaching additional items, such as a sleeping pad. The only problem is I'm barely able to connect the buckles, even with just a simple accordion-style mat. If they can add two inches in length to all of these straps for the next generation, I will be a fully happy camper.

Mystery Ranch Bridger 45 backpack review by Eric Hanson: The cam straps at the bottom and the top could use a bit more length.
The cam straps at the bottom and the top of the Bridger 45 could use a bit more length.

At $309 (USD), the Bridger 45 is a pinch above what other backpacks go for in the same size and quality class. I'd love to see that come down to the $270-80 range, but there's no question that the comfort, durability, and performance are all there to deliver some serious value.

And finally, at 4.4 pounds, this pack is heavier than your average 45L competitor. However, as I've touched on a couple times throughout this review, the raw weight doesn't tell the whole story. There are many zealous ultralight backpackers who would pass upon seeing this figure, which makes sense (there's no getting around the numbers), but the Bridger 45 also allows you to comfortably carry more weight.

There is certainly something to be said for the subjective perception of weight on the trail. And in that regard, this pack excels. It would be nice if Mystery Ranch could add a lighter pack to their arsenal, just so fastpackers can see how great the brand is.

I’m excited to provide my review for the new Bridger 65-liter backpack from Mystery Ranch!

The Mystery Ranch Bridger is a highly anticipated pack series and I was thrilled to finally get my hands on one to test. For several years the Mystery Ranch Terraframe 65L has been my go-to backpack. So I was excited to see what innovations were included in the Bridger.

Right off the bat I could tell that the Bridger pack was something unique. The first thing my eye caught is the re-designed yoke / chest strap system. Borrowing from a running vest style pack, the Bridger has two chest straps that connect across much wider mesh straps than I typically see on a backpack.

Check out another backpack review, Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60L backpack.

Comfort is key

The result is an ultra-comfortable carry. The redesigned yoke system does an amazing job of spreading out the weight and the contact points that often lead to sore shoulders and hotspots around the arm pits.

Bridger compared to Osprey Atmos or Gregory Baltoro

Over the last year I have been able to test other popular packs like the Osprey Atmos and Gregory Baltoro. It’s helpful to have an understand of many of the packs on the market to be able to talk about some of the ways the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65L stands out from the competition.

Mystery Ranch claims the Bridger pack is the “Cadillac of backpacks”

According to Mystery Ranch – the Bridger 65 is the “Cadillac of backpacks.” This pack is loaded with internal and external pockets for maximum gear packing. The large pocket opens fully for easy accessibility to the gear you need more immediately, like a raincoat, additional snack, first aid kit, or that extra flask. It is a weight-conscious and durable pack that easily supports your overnight or multi-day mission.

The Bridger 65 is built around the endurance yoke. This yoke is breathable, highly ventilated, with pocketed shoulder pads and pocketed waist belt for quick access to you water bottle, snacks (all the snacks!), or sunglasses. There is dual access to the main bag, including two full-length zippers on the front of the bag, and a drawstring shroud for easy accessibility to the main part of the bag without having to fully unpack.

The pack’s removable lid converts to a hip sack for shorter adventures when you may want to leave the main pack at basecamp. The Bridger 65 is hydration-reservoir compatible for additional water when you need it. There are two large, stretch woven back pockets with inner elastic top dump pockets. The speed zip sleeping bag compartment has a removable divider and a double layer bottom for improved durability.

Field testing the Bridger 65 Backpack in Peru and South Dakota

I had an opportunity to run some miles on this backpack, as well as use the Bridger 55L, on a previous backpacking trip across the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota. The Centennial Trail in South Dakota was a great place to test the new Bridger line from Mystery Ranch. My first impression? I love it! Let’s get into the details:

mystery ranch bridger 65L backpack review by Eric Hanson

How to choose a backpack

Finding the right backpack is an essential cornerstone of your backpacking gear. The main categories to keep in mind when choosing a backpack are weight of the pack, comfort, stability, breathability, torso fit, weight, accessibility to gear, and durability.

Best backpacks for hiking

Three backpacks come to mind when we talk about the best multi-day backpacks, the Osprey Atmos, the Gregory Baltoro and the Mystery Ranch Bridger. Comfort in backpacks is key to having a good experience. That is why the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65L is so different when compared to the Osprey Atmos 65L or Gregory Baltoro 65L. The yolk on the Bridger backpack is unique.

Is the Bridger 65 backpack comfortable?

Yes! The Bridger 65 is very comfortable. Its comfort is one thing that helps it stand apart and what makes it so special. The thoughtful design of the pack, how you can adjust it to fit you perfectly, as well as the breathability of the yoke, all work to make this a pack you can comfortably wear for hours. The double strapped yoke (which I initially was skeptical of) really is very comfortable and I think is a beautiful revolution in backpacking design.

How stable is the Bridger?

Stability is about the load and how it is carried – does it feel like things are floppy, or are things snug and secure? In my opinion, Mystery Ranch really knocks it out of the park with the new Bridger packs. I like the way that everything compresses together. The pack attaches to the frame which attaches to the yoke. I tend to carry heavy, sometimes awkward, loads when hiking as I bring camera gear and tripods with me. I find this pack to be incredibly stable.

Is the Bridger breathable compared to Osprey Atmos or Gregory Baltoro?

Mystery Ranch has done a really nice job of creating an airflow chamber right through the middle of the yoke to allow hot air to escape through the back. The endurance yokes are breathable and highly ventilated with lots of air holes allowing heat and air to move easily through. The frame and the yoke work together to avoid back-to-pack contact thereby maximizing air flow. While I have hiked with backpacks that were a little bit more breathable, I have zero complaints with the breathability of this system.

How do you adjust the torso fit for the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65L?

When you purchase a backpack, no matter the brand or the size, it is important to be able to fit it to your body easily. Mystery Ranch has a smart and unique fitting system. You can achieve a personalized fit by removing the sheath stored inside, and then you break the Velcro bond by prying it with the sheath. Once the Velcro is separated, it is easy to either lift or lower the frame to get it fitted for your torso length.

How much does the Mystery Ranch Bridger 65L weigh?

The Bridger 65L is 5.5 pounds, which is a more than some of the other backpacks in this category. What you trade in weight, however, you gain in comfort, stability and durability.

How accessible is gear in the Bridger 65L backpack?

The placement of pockets and the placement of the zippers make ease of access a breeze. This is another feature that really makes Mystery Ranch packs stand apart from the crowd. Zippers and pockets create multiple entry points to the gear you need on the fly. When I hike, I like to separate the items that are important. Items like toilet paper, cat hole digging devices, and other items that I may want to keep out of the main chamber away from my food, clothes, and toiletries.

I love the ability to fully flay open my backpack. The Bridger 65L makes it easy for me to be able to spread open the bag and grab different lenses or different camera pieces. I also like the way the zipper works for the sleeping bag compartment. The Bridger 65L has a folding buckle that also contains a completely straight zipper all the way across. When you open the zipper, the compartment really opens up and it’s a very accessible, large space and it is easy to fit your sleeping bag in.

The Bridger pack has multiple compression straps to close it up and cinch it. I really like the side pockets on the Bridger packs, as these are great for water bottles trekking poles tripods.

Mystery Ranch packs

If you are paying a premium for your backpack, you want it to last. One of the hallmarks of Mystery Ranch is that they make incredibly strong, beefy backpacks. Mystery Ranch makes packs for the military, firefighters, and people jumping out of planes. You know with the design of their backpacks rooted in this background, Mystery Ranch packs are going to last.

What is the load capacity of the Bridger backpack?

The Bridger pack can carry loads up to 55 pounds. It's sweet spot is for carrying between 30 and 50 pounds. I have easily carried over 40 pounds and the load was surprisingly comfortable. Exceeding 50 pounds is very heavy for a backpacking trip, and if you wish to do so, that's where other packs like the Terraframe come in.

Bridger 65 backpacks waterproof?

No. The Bridger pack is not waterproof. However, it will be able to withstand a fair bit of rain and moisture before any packed gear gets wet. The pack is made of heavy-duty nylon and treated with DWR for a water repellent finish. I'd be comfortable using this pack without a cover in intermittent rain. But if enduring consistent rain or wet conditions, use a pack cover or use dry bags inside the pack to protect your gear.

Mystery Ranch Bridger 65L cost

The Bridger 65L retailed for $349 at the time of the review. I think that's good value for what you get. I recognize that it is a little bit on the higher end of the price spectrum when compared with the Osprey Atmos 65L and Gregory Baltoro 65L, both which currently retail for about $270 USD. But for the difference in price you get more comfort and superior stability. This pack is for both beginner and expert hikers, as both will benefit from Mystery Ranch’s innovative double sternum straps. This design has been seen before in running packs and is a game changer for backpacking as it changes how you carry the heavier loads (more stability).

Bridger backpacks worth it?

The Bridger 65L will appeal to a wide audience. It is meant for the beginner backpacker who is just getting started. It is also a solid choice for the seasoned hiker who guides for a living and wants a pack to live out of that is functional and comfortable.

If you want to compare with other similar-size trekking bags, check out another backpack review, the Mariposa 60.
